English Tutoring - Personalized, Professional, And Fun!
About
My name is Kent Cairo, and thank you for your interest in my English tutoring sessions! I know learning another language can take some effort, but also know it is worth it, and can be a lot of fun! I speak English, Spanish, and am learning French. If you are just learning English, and, it is easier to communicate with me in another language for now, please let me know :-)
I have been teaching English classes to adults for almost 25 years, have a TESOL (Teaching English to Student of Other Languages) Certification, and a university BA degree in Sociology. The eperience and academic background help me work with my students at their optimum level. I am currently an elementary Guest Teacher with the Verona Area School District, Wisconsin. I have also taught on line for a year which has helped intigrate a variety of additional resources for my students.
While having received several teaching awards, and pleased watching my students excel, I am most gratified when my students want to continue learning, and enjoy the classes. I have also been fortunate to meet some wonderful people. I was brought in Spanish-speaking contries from ages 2 - 18, and love learning from/about other cultures and languages as well!

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
An orientation including: 1. review of dates/times, preperation for the sessions, gathering an understanding of a student's interests, needs, and preferences, particularly those related to language acquisition and learning, and 3. sharing an outline of topics/skills to be covered.
A tutoring session many times starts with a review of homework or an outside assignment/project, and questions a student may have regarding that work, followed by a review of a previous lesson, practice and application of that material using a variety of activities, games, etc.
A new lesson would be introduced using modeling and examples. The student repeats and practices the new vocabulary, grammatical concept , conjugation, etc. using different skill domains (listening, speaking, reading, and writing), starting with more basic exercises/activites, integrating with prior learning, and then applying it in applicable settings.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
* 25 years of ESL (English as a Second Language) instruction
* TESOL (Teaching English to Students of Another Language) certification from the College of Lake County, IL
* one year experience teaching English online
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.

How did you get started teaching?
I started as a Teacher's Assistant, and later began teaching Dual Langauage (Spanish and English) 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grades/classrooms at the suggestion of the Director of that program. I began teaching ESL to adults at the suggestion of a friend who thought I would be a good teacher at the college he was teaching at.
What types of students have you worked with?
Both as an ESL teacher for adults and an elementary teacher I have taught students from several cultural, ethnic, racial and socioeconomic backgrounds. While I was an elementary dual language teacher, most of my students were from a Hispanic background.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
My visit to Mexico over the summer. My wife and I attended a nephew's wedding in Monterrtey, Mexico. From there we spent five days in Mexico City and surrounding area, followed by a week in smaller, historical towns of Guanajuato and San Migue de Allende.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Find someone with proper credentials and background, a wide range of experience, whom you feel is trully excited about teaching and and getting to know you.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Do I have the proper technology for the sessions?
What are the English skills I need most - listening, speaking, reading, writing, all of these? How will I use these, and how will they help me?
Can the teacher be flexible to schedule changes I may have?
