I'm graduating from UW-Madison this spring 2024 with a BA in English and two certificates: Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), and Social Justice and Education. I'd love to offer individualized conversational or formal English patterns, structures and concepts! I've been invested in the English language since primary school, and in addition being a native Midwestern English speaker, I also wanted to look into learning Mandarin as another global language as I investigate the field of English Language teaching and second language learning.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

I'm new to the process, so any direction or desires on the part of the student or parent(s) are absolutely fine to run by me.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I'm in the middle of taking classes to earn my TESOL certificate at UW-Madison along with a Bachelor's in English language and linguistics, so my classes have required an in-depth introduction to language teaching and formal/academic English features.

How did you get started teaching?

For my TESOL certificate, we first tutored other students at UW-Madison (I was paired with a graduate and a master's student) in casual Conversational English sessions, and then we co-taught classes of International Scholars of all ages and language backgrounds in the same subject.

What types of students have you worked with?

All kinds!

Describe a recent event you are fond of.

I went to the gym (for the first time in a while!) with a friend I hadn't seen in a little while, and we both had a great time! It was a not-so-subtle reminder that even the things that seem difficult in advance, or in speculation, end up being better for us than any phony alternative!

What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?

Feel free to offer feedback at any point throughout the process! Learning is a collaborative effort

What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?

While I hope to provide solid academic/professional or even just conversational English support, I am still a full-time student for a bit longer. I may be hyper or exhausted (due to other obligations, academic or otherwise) during sessions, but I'm always ready to a) to support the student, and b) help them support themselves!
