High School Physics Teacher
About
Unlike many tutors, I have a degree in physics and am currently a certified working high school physics teacher. That means that I have both the content backround and education creditials to help you get the best from your tutoring experience. You'll feel like you have a real teacher working on-one-on with you (because you truly will)! Even this year during online learning, I've gotten quite a lot of postivie feedback from my students, saying that the energy I bring every day keeps them hooked.
I really love helping all different types of students succeed. I find it really rewarding to be able to understand their learning style and alter my teaching for them. I also get a thrill from that "aha" momement students have, when something finally clicks. This is special because it's a moment when students gain confidence! Even if a student won't go into math or science, building that confidence to tackle future problems is something I believe is very important.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I want to get to know them first. I want to learn what their hobbies are, what makes them tick, etc. Developing a rappor with a student is crucial for learning, because research shows that lots of learners are social motivated. Then I want to know what their current class they need help with is like. What is the structure? What is the teacher's teaching style? How much in-class versus out of class work is there? How much hands-on practice is the student gettting? Then I want to pinpoint sticking points the student is having. What exactly do they need help on, so I can best maximize my time with them? Finally, I'd want to see them work out problems they struggle with to assess, in my opinion, what they are struggling with exactly (reading through a problem, math errors, a conceptual issue, etc).
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a bachelors degree in Physics from Pomona College, a Masters in Education from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, and a teaching certification in secondary science from Illinois. I am currently a practicing physics teacher. Additionally, I have experience tutoring college-level math and physics courses, and developing and teaching middle to high school makerspace classes.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
My hourly rate is $25. This is a bit higher than some tutors, but I promise that the standard of teaching you or your child will recieve is worth the price. If you want a tutor with the experience of a real teacher, then I'd love to help you.
