About
For 7 years, I’ve been helping students feel confident in their learning with kindness! I love making learning fun and easy, whether you need a little extra help or want a bigger challenge. I’m almost finished with my math degree, and I have a great setup for both online and in-person lessons.
To make sure everyone can get help, I usually charge $65 an hour, but I can work with different prices between $40 and $80, depending on what you need.

Perhaps what I most appreciate about Carissa is that she’s not only been a good math tutor, but she gets along amazingly with my 15-year-old-grandson. He can be in a negative space when I pick him up from school, and he clearly perks up when he and Carissa are working together – I hear them laugh together often. There doesn’t seem to be any ‘superiority’ in the relationship although it’s clear that she’s won the respect of my grandson.
Other things I also appreciate: she’s been highly reliable; she’s made every effort to accommodate and flex to meet our needs relative to schedules; she’s researched and recommended helpful resources; she’s been responsive when I’ve sent her messages; she’s been good about leeting us know if there a reason she needs to miss a session – and she always tries to make it up; she’s been willing to communicate with my grandson’s math teacher at school; and I should not fail to mention that I think her rates are quite reasonable.
Carissa is able to be an effective tutor without standing on formality, and that not the impression I got from other math tutors I initially considered. I truly ENJOY seeing her every week, and I would highly recommend her to anyone!

She comes to my home. She seems to be down to earth and to have successfully engaged my teenage grandson. She has been responsive to our concerns and is structuring her tutoring to review foundational material before moving forward. Given that weve only had our first 4 sessions, its too soon to say much more.

Carissa does a great job with our daughter who is currently in AP Calc, and we previously hired her to assist with Algebra II. Carissa is patient, ensures understanding, and keeps moving through the material (not spending time on skills that are understood). We have asked Carissa to tutor both in person and over Zoom at different times, and she has been flexible which is appreciated. She is professional and comes prepared. We would certainly hire her again.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
My top priority is to get to know you and understand what you need help with. The best ways to reach me are by texting, or calling (253)220-7243. We can usually set up our first session within 24 hours!
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I’ve been helping students from 2nd grade all the way up to university level for 7 years! Before I graduated high school in 2018, I earned my Associate's degree. Now, I’m just one semester away from finishing my Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics at a Liberal Arts University. For the last three years, I’ve also been teaching math, writing, art, and STEM classes for 3rd to 5th graders at a private school.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
To make sure everyone can get help, I usually charge $65 an hour, but I can work with different prices between $40 and $80, depending on what you need.
How did you get started teaching?
I want to understand the big picture and the "why" behind learning. When I really get things, it helps me help others better. I’ve seen how much tutoring can make a difference, and I want to do that for you too!
What types of students have you worked with?
I've worked with all kinds of students, from 2nd graders all the way up to college students, of all backgrounds including neurodivergent folks. After 7 years of private tutoring, community programs, and helping students my university, I’ve learned how to adjust my teaching to fit each student's needs!
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I got a text that said, "He got an A!" I was so happy and proud of all the hard work we did together to reach that goal!
One of my students from the first summer camp liked it so much that they decided to join for the next three weeks too!
I also feel really proud when I help a student understand something better and see them go from feeling nervous to feeling calm and hopeful during our session.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Do they treat you with respect and understanding? Do they know what it feels like to struggle? What will they do if you don’t get something the first time?
Learning support should be encouraging. It’s really important to have someone who focuses on what you can do, not just what you can’t. This helps you make progress and feel more confident!
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Before talking to teachers about their needs, or at the start of tutoring students should talk to their teacher about these questions:
What do I need help with? Is it a specific subject or a particular topic?
How do I feel about asking for help? Am I nervous or unsure? Why?
What have I tried already? Have I worked on this by myself or with someone else?
What’s my learning style? Do I understand things better when someone explains them, or do I prefer hands-on activities?
What are my goals? What grade or understanding do I want to achieve?
How can I explain my struggles? Can I give examples of what’s hard for me?
What kind of support do I think I need? Do I need more practice, a different explanation, or a little extra time?
Thinking about these questions can help students communicate their needs better and get the support they deserve!
