Perhaps what I most appreciate about Carissa is that she’s not only been a good math tutor, but she gets along amazingly with my 15-year-old-grandson. He can be in a negative space when I pick him up from school, and he clearly perks up when he and Carissa are working together – I hear them laugh together often. There doesn’t seem to be any ‘superiority’ in the relationship although it’s clear that she’s won the respect of my grandson.
Other things I also appreciate: she’s been highly reliable; she’s made every effort to accommodate and flex to meet our needs relative to schedules; she’s researched and recommended helpful resources; she’s been responsive when I’ve sent her messages; she’s been good about leeting us know if there a reason she needs to miss a session – and she always tries to make it up; she’s been willing to communicate with my grandson’s math teacher at school; and I should not fail to mention that I think her rates are quite reasonable.
Carissa is able to be an effective tutor without standing on formality, and that not the impression I got from other math tutors I initially considered. I truly ENJOY seeing her every week, and I would highly recommend her to anyone!

She comes to my home. She seems to be down to earth and to have successfully engaged my teenage grandson. She has been responsive to our concerns and is structuring her tutoring to review foundational material before moving forward. Given that weve only had our first 4 sessions, its too soon to say much more.

Carissa does a great job with our daughter who is currently in AP Calc, and we previously hired her to assist with Algebra II. Carissa is patient, ensures understanding, and keeps moving through the material (not spending time on skills that are understood). We have asked Carissa to tutor both in person and over Zoom at different times, and she has been flexible which is appreciated. She is professional and comes prepared. We would certainly hire her again.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
My first priority is to get to know you and what you need from tutoring. First, i want to set up a phone call, email, and/or text about your needs. Next, I ask you to fill out a New Student form (https://forms.gle/DZiDwTJZExjt3Y7u6) to get to know you more, schedule our first session, and arrange payment.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I earned my Associate of General Studies in 2018 before graduating from High school, and I am currently finishing my Bachelor of Science in Mathematics at a Liberal Arts University. I have also taught math and writing programs for 3rd-5th grade students at a private school the last two summers.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
My pricing system is a sliding scale of $40-80/hr, based on the level of expertise required and what's reasonable for you financially. Here's a breakdown of suggested rates:
High School & University $55-75
Middle School $50-65
Elementary School $40-55
How did you get started teaching?
I want to understand the "why" of things, and learning on a deeper level has allowed me to help others throughout my academic career. Moreover, my academic success would not have been possible without receiving tutoring; knowing firsthand how valuable tutoring is, I want to provide it to others.
What types of students have you worked with?
Through private tutoring, community outreach work, and university drop-in hours I work with students at every point in their learning from 3rd grade through University.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I recently received the text, "He got an A!" I was so happy for him and proud of the work we did to achieve the A.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
How does the person treat you? How does the person treat the subject?
Learning support should be supportive. Having someone emphasize what you can do rather than what you can't is huge for a student's ability to make progress and build confidence.
I approach problems as a team with my student, working together letting them know it's okay not to know and rightfully applauding them as they progress.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Why do you tutor?
What motivates the tutor has a big impact on how they work with you. I am happiest when I am helping people and so my efforts are centered on finding what works for each individual as a person and a student.
What's your goal for tutoring?
Identifying your goal for tutoring allows the tutor to prioritize how you spend your session time. A session solidifying comprehension differs greatly from one geared toward last-minute exam preparation, but both are doable!
