About
My passion is helping people; making learning math possible and positive for everyone is something I have adored for 9 years. Working with K-12 and University, I meet students where they are at in their journey with the kindness, and respect that builds confidence and skill.
Also I am committed to making my services accessible for all so please let me know if my default rate of $65/hr is a barrier for you. I will make it work with you!

Perhaps what I most appreciate about Carissa is that she’s not only been a good math tutor, but she gets along amazingly with my 15-year-old-grandson. He can be in a negative space when I pick him up from school, and he clearly perks up when he and Carissa are working together – I hear them laugh together often. There doesn’t seem to be any ‘superiority’ in the relationship although it’s clear that she’s won the respect of my grandson.
Other things I also appreciate: she’s been highly reliable; she’s made every effort to accommodate and flex to meet our needs relative to schedules; she’s researched and recommended helpful resources; she’s been responsive when I’ve sent her messages; she’s been good about leeting us know if there a reason she needs to miss a session – and she always tries to make it up; she’s been willing to communicate with my grandson’s math teacher at school; and I should not fail to mention that I think her rates are quite reasonable.
Carissa is able to be an effective tutor without standing on formality, and that not the impression I got from other math tutors I initially considered. I truly ENJOY seeing her every week, and I would highly recommend her to anyone!

She comes to my home. She seems to be down to earth and to have successfully engaged my teenage grandson. She has been responsive to our concerns and is structuring her tutoring to review foundational material before moving forward. Given that weve only had our first 4 sessions, its too soon to say much more.

Carissa does a great job with our daughter who is currently in AP Calc, and we previously hired her to assist with Algebra II. Carissa is patient, ensures understanding, and keeps moving through the material (not spending time on skills that are understood). We have asked Carissa to tutor both in person and over Zoom at different times, and she has been flexible which is appreciated. She is professional and comes prepared. We would certainly hire her again.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Online/virtually or in person, I work with the student and their support system to understand their individual needs. This starts with texting or a phone call about their experiences with math when we can also schedule our first session. Between then and our first session I will review any recent material the student has been working on so I know what we need to focus on!
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
As a tutor with 9 years of experience, and a current student, 1 semester away from my Bachelor's in Mathematics, I am deeply connected to the student experience of learning math. I know how important the right support system has been throughout my education. Also, I earned my associates before graduating High School, so I know what it is like to struggle, challenge myself, and feel the wonder/relief/peace of success.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
My default rate is $65 per hour. Making support accessible is a major priority for me so if $65/hr is a barrier to choosing me as your tutor please let me know and I will work with you on pricing down to $25/hr if needed.
How did you get started teaching?
I have always been driven to understand the big picture and the "why" behind learning. That thorough understanding made me a good source for my peers, so I started offering my services as an educator. I also know how much having the right support means to me in my education and want to give that to my students!
What types of students have you worked with?
I've worked with students at all points in their math learning journey, all the way from K-12 through University from all backgrounds especially neurodivergent folks. I adjust my teaching to fit each student's individual needs!
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Anytime my student feels like their making progress I am beyond happy.
Most of the time that's things like getting 3 questions in a row correct, and little light bulb moments of realization that add up to receiving the text from parents "They got an A on their final!"
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Do they treat you with respect and understanding? What is their approach when students struggle? What do they do when they struggle/don't know how to teach something?
Learning support should be confidence building! It’s really important to have someone who focuses on what you can do, not just what you can’t.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Am I understanding the question correctly?
Where can I look for a similar problem (textbooks, notes, past assignments)?
I am I struggling with a question or the whole topic?
How can I explain my struggles? Can I give examples of what’s hard for me?
Have I reread the question?
What kind of support do I think I need? Do I need more practice, a different explanation, or extra time?
Thinking about these questions can help students communicate their needs better and get the support they deserve!
