Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
In the first session, I do an assessment of the student's strengths, weaknesses, and learning style. I use The Qualitative Reading Inventory. I determine which materials will work best with the student.
In the second session, I bring a few stories at the grade level the assessment indicated. We start with what I think is the best type of story in length and appearance. I change the story when the student is not comfortable with the "look" of the materials. Sometimes students are afraid of reading a story that they think is too long. I give him/her a shorter story at the same grade level.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a B.S. and a Ph.D. in Elementary Education.
I have a K-8 Washington State Elementary Teacher Certification.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
My hourly rate is $70/hr. This covers my time and expertise.
I go to my students' homes, but I do not charge for fuel.
How did you get started teaching?
What types of students have you worked with?
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Choosing a tutor or a teacher depends on the issue(s) your child is having.
A tutor can be a high school student, college student, or certified teacher. Helping a student with their school homework can be done by the first two. But if the student is not at grade level, more expertise is needed.
A certified teacher who has lots of experience in the schools will know what to do to determine where the issue(s) lies and what to do to get the student to grade level.
The more complex the issue(s) is, it is more likely that a Learning Therapist (Ph.D.) is needed. The level of expertise can understand a doctor's or school's report. The report usually states what the student is having difficulty doing (brain function); however, it doesn't say how to address the issue(s).
As an experienced Certified Teacher, Reading Specialist, and Learning Therapist, I have been highly successful in getting academically diverse students to grade level. Contact me to see how I can help you.
