Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I approach every tutoring session with the intent to support and inspire my tutees to reach their writing goals. We work together to brainstorm, outline, write, and edit in order to develop strong arguments and accurately convey the student's knowledge and opinions. I tailor my sessions to the individual student's needs so that I can best serve them. I encourage students to be creative and unafraid to express their unique voices and experiences in their writing, helping them develop the skills necessary to feel confident in what they produce.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Middlebury College in 2018. During my four years there, I worked as a writing and public speaking tutor, meeting with students of all years and skill levels. Since graduation, I have tutored a wide age range of students, including high schoolers working on college admissions essays, middle schoolers seeking assistance learning grammar rules, elementary students working on creative writing skills, and adult English Language Learners. I am currently in graduate school pursuing a master's degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling.

What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
It is important to hire a tutor who is both knowledgeable and approachable. A good tutor knows how to create a comfortable, supportive environment that fosters learning. Being able to interact well is just as important as teaching skill.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Students should have goals in mind before entering tutoring sessions. These can be both general goals about developing writing skills or specific goals relating to a current assignment or writing project.
Some examples:
What areas do I feel confident in?
Which areas do I need work on?
What is my biggest obstacle in writing this essay?
What do I hope to know or accomplish once I leave my tutoring session?
By setting these learning goals, students will have more direction in their sessions and get more specific, productive teaching.
