About
Greetings!
My name is Chelsea Whealdon, and I provide tutoring services for high school/college level students in biology, intro level chemistry, reading and writing, as well as SAT/ACT reading comprehension and college application essays. I also provide writing and reading tutoring for students of all ages. Additionally, I support students to develop and hone their study skills, including how to employ effective note-taking, memorization techniques, how to prioritize and manage time, become more organized, learn from mistakes, test-taking strategies & manage test-taking anxiety, and develop a growth mindset.
I have an abundance of tutoring experience at all levels, and provide highly professional and thoughtful tutoring support. I am enrolled in a masters program in Nutrition and Public Health at the University of Washington and currently taking organic chemistry and biochemistry while also working as a tutor. I also have a background working in policy (received by B.A. in Human Rights) and I have strong reading and writing skills. I have successfully tutored students in both the sciences and social studies arenas, and also completed the GRE myself this past November, scoring in the 92nd percentile for writing and 83rd percentile for reading.
As a student myself, I understand what it can feel like to struggle in class or with a particular topic. However, using a growth mindset approach to effectively combat negative self-talk and frustrations, I have excelled in classes as a 4.0 student and have effectively supported others to do the same! Making mistakes and feeling confused is a natural part of the learning process, and in addition to tutoring in specific subject areas, I support my students to apply effective study skill techniques that allow for personal growth and feelings of efficacy as a student.
I love working with people and helping them master something that previously overwhelmed, frustrated, or scared them. I believe that learning is fun, and the process of teaching to facilitate the learning process is incredibly rewarding.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I do an initial 15 minute phone call to understand the client's needs, including goals, areas of focus, scheduling, etc. I also then take some time to explain about my approach as a tutor. From there, if it feels like a good fit, then I will suggest we move forward and leave it up to the client to decide how to proceed!
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a wide variety of experience working with all age groups. I have received intensive training working for nonprofit extended learning time and afterschool programs. This work included managing a classroom of 25+ middle and elementary school students, as well as providing one-on-one support. I also have worked as a tutor at the community college level, tutoring in subjects including biology, microbiology, intro to chemistry, nutrition, and anatomy and physiology.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Yes. Initial 15 minute phone call is free. After that I charge $40/hr. This price includes prep and follow-up, which I include in the package along with each tutoring session.
