Describe a recent event you are fond of.
After completing the editing process with a student on their school paper, I noticed the student remembered the applied rules of grammer and sentence structure. My theory for the sudden improvement of memory was ownership; students learn faster and easier when they have a stake in a final product, and the composition and editing processes provide an opportunity to refine work product resulting in a greater sense of pride of ownership.
Additionally, an adult student engaged me to help her pass a comprehensive math exam as pert of her effort to further her career path. The student was initially shy to reveal her learning needs, but my 'no-judgement,' approach encouraged her to feel comfortable and eager to press forward. In a short period of time, the student significantly improved both math and writing skills, and she advanced in her career ever more than she originally hoped for.
These and many other stories are a part of my story, and each are verifiable by means of reference. What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Professional tutors must be patient and compassionate at all levels of learning. They must incorporate both holistic and systematic approaches to helping students break through barriers and make lasting strides in their learning.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
When seeking help, consider whether your goal is conceptual learning or mere homework help. A professional tutor whose approach is focused on student learning should be able to help a student progress beyond mere satisfaction of homework assignments toward academic passion and self-directed learning.
