About

I am a university professor, joyful writer, and highly effective tutor for students needing assistance in writing, math, history, and exam-prep. Students struggling with any facet of academic English, mathematics, reading comprehension or exam-prep strategies can thrive under my instruction by discovering the joy of effective learning.

For SAT prep, the vast majority of my students achieve score of 1500 or above using proven techniques I have tested for well over a decade.

Middle school, high school, college, and graduate students desiring to excel in their academic research writing or math pursuits will find my approach refreshingly methodical, practical, efficient, and fun.

For those honing their skills in research writing, I am fluent in all major styles and a valuable writing partner and editor for those who recognize the importance of clarity through concision, structure, and word use.

Additionally, I have developed unique and effective strategies for helping ESL students of all ages reach important learning milestones in their pursuit of English language.

Having graduated at the top of my class (4.0 GPA), I have also received several academic awards. I earned my master's degree with high honors and excelled in my doctoral studies.

I truly enjoy discovering new ways of helping students master any and all academic challenges.

Concerning writing and communication, I believe anyone who genuinely desires to learn can become an effective communicator in a relatively short period of time. I combine focused, face-to-face teaching techniques (via Zoom with advance collaboration tools) with real time, no-cost coaching between tutoring sessions.

My situation was unique. I had serious epileptic seizures during high school resulting in multiple brain surgeries and a long, challenging recovery. Matt entered my life during this time; I still had assignments to complete before graduation and an impending SAT exam, so I met with Matt twice a week and learned the essential concepts of writing and reading comprehension. While math was my strong suit, Matt helped me identify some earlier math concepts that needed refreshing. My initial SAT score prior to my relationship with Matt was 1260, but, after tutoring, I received a 1510 and was accepted by my school of choice for pre-med studies. I continue to meet with Matt two or three times per week during my undergraduate studies for more advanced writing strategies. I cannot imagine a better academic mentor than I have found with Matt.

I’ve been working with Professor Lewis for just over a year now. I had been searching for a tutor for some time to improve my math and writing skills; when I found Matt and began working with him, I realized I found someone who would make a significant contribution to my learning. Matt is professional, knowledgeable, and patient, and he always finds a way to make learning fun and simpler than I anticipate.

After working with Matt for just over a year, I can say definitively the writing skills I have achieved over this period of time have proven useful in college preparation. As I continue my final year of highschool, I am confident my new skills will carry me into college and beyond. This experience has been very helpful to me.

Matt Lewis is an extraordinary tutor, mentor, and friend. He excels with keeping me on track through my academic journey. Because of Matt, my writing skills have improved to college level, even though Im still in high school. Matt will get to know you personally and provide an experience that is tailor made to your personal strengths. Matt’s teaching strengths go beyond just writing; he coached me through several other subjects including math, theology, philosophy, and history. I recommend Matt for any of these subjects and also because of his unique, mentored approach.

    Frequently asked questions

I I meet each student just where they are and vary my teaching pace according to each student's needs and quickly adapt to each level of understanding. I usually begin with an assessment to determine areas of academic need and then set up a weekly schedule for tutoring. Progress is measured continually using standardized benchmarks, real-time coaching between sessions via text messaging is made available at no extra cost.

Having graduated at the top of my class (4.0 GPA), I have also received several major academic awards. I earned my master's degree with high honors and excelled in my doctoral studies. .

I charge $75 per hour plus or minus $10 depending on a variety of factors.

My passion for teaching began during my own academic path when I observed some teachers and professors are significantly more joyful and passionate about teaching than others. My observations turned to evaluation, investigation, and doctoral education seeking to find better, more effective learning pathways for students of all ages.

In roughly equal proportions, I work with middle school, high school, undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate students as well as working professionals.

Additionally, I have extensive experience working with students with learning disabilities including executive functioning, dyslexia, ADD, ADHD, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, and others.

After completing the editing process with a student on their school paper, I noticed the student remembered the applied rules of grammer and sentence structure. My theory for the sudden improvement of memory was ownership; students learn faster and easier when they have a stake in a final product, and the composition and editing processes provide an opportunity to refine work product resulting in a greater sense of pride of ownership.

Additionally, an adult student engaged me to help her pass a comprehensive math exam as pert of her effort to further her career path. The student was initially shy to reveal her learning needs, but my 'no-judgement,' approach encouraged her to feel comfortable and eager to press forward. In a short period of time, the student significantly improved both math and writing skills, and she advanced in her career ever more than she originally hoped for.

These and many other stories are a part of my story, and each are verifiable by means of reference.

Professional tutors must be patient and compassionate at all levels of learning. They must incorporate both holistic and systematic approaches to helping students break through barriers and make lasting strides in their learning.

When seeking help, consider whether your goal is conceptual learning or mere homework help. A professional tutor whose approach is focused on student learning should be able to help a student progress beyond mere satisfaction of homework assignments toward academic passion and self-directed learning.
