About

Hi, I’m Sumaya—a Med-Surg Registered Nurse and dedicated tutor who loves helping students feel confident and capable. With experience in Med-Surg, geriatrics, and behavioral health, plus years of academic leadership, I’m skilled at breaking down complex topics like anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, dosage calculations, and general K–12 material into simple, clear steps. As a multilingual tutor, I’m especially supportive of English-language learners and first-generation students, and I always tailor my teaching style to each learner. Students describe me as patient, encouraging, and easy to talk to, and I work hard to create a comfortable space where questions are always welcome. I’m reliable, understanding, and truly invested in helping every student reach their goals.

    Frequently asked questions

Whenever possible, I reserve a portion of our first session for introductions and getting to know each other. Following that, I speak with the student about their study skills, strengths & weaknesses, and how I can best support them. Throughout the session, my goal is not only to "help" you but also to provide you with the tools necessary to support yourself. This way, you're able to develop the strategic thinking skills necessary to succeed in your course!

I hold a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Washington, where I gained extensive training in anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, and clinical decision-making. I’m a licensed Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse with hands-on experience in Med-Surg, geriatrics, behavioral health, and pediatric oncology settings. In addition to my clinical background, I have years of academic leadership, tutoring, and mentoring experience, which has strengthened my ability to teach complex material in a clear and approachable way.

My sessions are priced at $45+/hr. However, it depends on the student's needs and budget.

I first officially started teaching in 2019 as an after-school volunteer tutor at the KCLS Library in Tukwila, where I helped K–12 students with homework, explained course concepts, and kept the learning area organized. But even before that, I was always the go-to tutor for my siblings. Being homeschooled taught me creative study strategies and all the little tips and tricks that make learning enjoyable, which naturally led me to helping others succeed.
I’ve worked with a wide range of students, including K–12 learners, college students, English-language learners, first-generation students, and those needing extra support with study skills or foundational subjects. I’ve also worked with students from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, as well as learners who benefit from a patient, step-by-step teaching style. In my nursing and clinical roles, I’ve supported peers and new learners in understanding complex medical concepts, which has strengthened my ability to teach across different ages and learning needs.
Look for a tutor who can explain complex topics in a way that feels clear, calm, and personalized to you. In subjects like anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, and general study skills, it’s important to choose someone who is patient, approachable, and willing to adjust their teaching style based on how you learn best. A strong tutor should help you feel comfortable asking questions, break concepts down into simple steps, and give you strategies you can use long after the session ends.
Students should consider a few key questions to make sure they find the right match: What specific topics or skills do I need help with? Do I prefer quick explanations or a slower, more detailed approach? What goals do I want to reach—better grades, deeper understanding, or test preparation? How do I learn best (visual, step-by-step, practice problems, conversation, etc.)? How often do I want tutoring sessions, and what structure would support me most?
