About

Oh my! I had almost finished this part of my profile and I left for 10 min and it was gone.

I have been tutoring for over 22 years and I still love it. I have many specialties so I will put them on by bullet point for now, so I can get this done before it disappears again.

• I tutor every subject taught in grades K-8

•I tutor everything except math and foreign languages in 9-12 grades. I am excellent with all aspects of Language Arts (grammar, literature, writing, etc.), science and History.

•I tutor students for all standardized tests: for the TOEPL (English as second language),

The English, Reading and Reader Comprehension in the PSAT, SAT, and ACT. This past year I tutored a standardized test for elementary and middle school

•I tutor children with different disabilities: ADD, ADHD, AUTISM, High Functioning Autism, ASPERGERS, Reading Difficuties

•I tutor college and university students in Writing, Grammar, English, Literature, Reading and Reading Comprehension

•I tutor Graduate students in Writing, Grammar, English, Literature, Reading and Reading Comprehension

•I tutor International students

I have tutored students in all of the areas I mentioned above. Each student learns differently and it can take up to two month to build a bond of trust. I teach with humor, props, singing, I will even read to them so that they can hear inflection tone and rhythm. And then I ask them to read to me in the way they heard it. Children on screens most of the time lose the art of reading with the excitement, joy, anger, fear, hope, grief. To understand what the story is about is to read a book with those feelings and more. It is important for children read while someone or Kindle reads with them.

One thing I noticed in the early years of teaching. Most of the students i was tutoring at the time were in community College. I was a paid tutor in the Writing Lab snd the Math Lab at South Seattle Community College. I was also a tutor for the Nursing program. When I was concentrating on a student reading to me, I would make sure we took break. We would talk about each section and how the whole story was building to something and how each piece was a part of the whole. I began to notice that no matter how good a reader was, a student would skip a word if they didn’t know it.

Then, I became aware that students would do the same thing when studying for PSAT, SAT and ACT exams. The words that the student missed were usually the ones that the test questioned.

At some point during all of this I started tutoring elementary students. I noticed that first graders skipped words they didn’t know. As I continued to tutor high school and elementary students, I realized that the high schoolers weren’t skipping the word they didnt know, they didn’t even see it.

So now I have the students 1st grade through 12th grade underline or write down the word the older students must write the definitions. When we meet again we talk about how the word fits into the context of the story. I spend time with my students learning vocabulary and spelling.
