Hello! I offer 30-minute, 45-minute and 55-minute sessions to accommodate budgets— but I recommend that students tutor at least 90 minutes per week. The more tutoring per week, the faster the progress!

My specialty is the development of reading excellence with ages 5 to 95. It doesn't matter if the student doesn’t know how to read at all, or if they have a severe reading problem. The methods I use are highly structured--and they work!

I address all aspects of reading development, but in a significantly different way. I also work with a few clients on writing skills (I am a nationally published author, see below).

Quick information:

--I began asking why bright kids develop reading problems in the 1990s . I was working in public education and BOTH of my children developed severe reading problems.

--In the early 2000s, I authored and co-authored 2 books on (1) visual processing issues and reading development (2002 & 2003) and (2) on the right foundations for early reading success (2005). I've been a parent advocate on both topics for 20+ years. (Publishers: St. Martin's Press & McGraw-Hill, New York City.)

--For 25 years, I have studied the public education policies that cause 67% of all U.S. students to struggle with reading (data source: National Assessment of Educational Progress--NOTE: The 2024 NAEP assessment jumped up to 70% of students struggling with reading!).

Reading ability nationally is DECLINING, not improving, despite 25 years of the "science of reading."

--I have a Master's Degree in Public Administration specific to public policies associated with reading instruction. Public policies associated with the "science of reading" have guided how teachers teach reading in U.S. schools since the early 2000s. Most reading problems are caused by how reading is taught!

--Since 2017, I’ve been trained in reading excellence tutoring skills by my long-time friend and mentor: Dee Tadlock, Ph.D. She is an expert in learning theory and reading development who investigated, applied, and tested a host of brain science to new methods that she developed over a 40-year period. She discovered WHY reading instruction causes most reading problems.

--In 2017, I used her methods with a dozen college-age struggling readers for my Master's Degree Capstone Project. Two of my 12 study subjects arrived at risk of failing college, but moved from their Grade 4 reading ability to high school reading ability with just a compressed 12 weeks of tutoring. Both graduated from their undergrad programs on time. One completed her own Master's Degree two years later!

--I have clients of all ages who stay in touch with me because Dr. Tadlock's methods WORK. They include: Very young children who I taught to read from phonics up; older elementary kids who could name words poorly to well, but couldn't understand anything they read; and normally developing and disabled teens who never thought they'd become successful readers.

--My own children plus several nieces and nephews overcame reading problems with Dr. Tadlock's methods. And, my two school-age grandsons (now ages 10 and 7) STARTED public school already reading with total comprehension and fluency.
