About

I am a college professor with experience tutoring students of all ages, backgrounds, and interests. I am high energy and dedicated to student success, and will work with your instructors if given the chance. I have been tutoring since I was in high school, and have experience both in person and online. I have a Master’s in biomedical research, and a Bachelors in biology with a minor in biochemistry.

I love seeing the “a-ha” moment when students really understand a topic they have been struggling with, and I’ll do almost anything to get to that moment! Funny mnemonics, songs, crazy connections, videos that I find helpful, etc. I love the flexibility of changing strategies to fit a students learning style, and teaching them how to study for different topics and classes in ways that are the most efficient and helpful to them. I find it incredibly satisfying to see my students do well!

Kim has helped tutor me in several science courses including biochemistry, molecular genetics, and scientific techniques. What I really love about Kim as a tutor is she is able to take a really complex topic and break it down in a way that makes it really easy to understand. She does this using a mixture of humor and everyday experiences. She really is a phenomenal tutor. Highly recommended!

Frequently asked questions

I typically start by having the student tell me about themselves, and either learn or tell me their learning style, so I can tailor my lessons to their specific learning needs. I then ask the student for the syllabus of the class they are having trouble in, as well a lesson if they are able so I can get an idea of the type of detail their instructor is looking for. I'll then ask the student what areas they are struggling in; if they don't know, I'll make a quiz pre-assessment to determine in which areas they are lacking.

I recieved my Bachelor's in Biology with a minor in Biochemistry from University of Mary Washington, Magna Cum Laude, with University Honors. I then recieved my Master's of Biomedical Research Science from Eastern Virginia Medical School, completing and defending a 2-year thesis project that covered the role of mitochondria in Alzheimer's Disease. I took classes that focused on educational strategies in the sciences as a part of my graduate degree. I now am an adjunct professor at a community college as well as work in a research lab.

I do not have a "standard" pricing: it starts at 30-35$ a session and goes up depending on how intensive the needs of the student are, the intricacy of the material, and how involved I will need to be (for example, formulating mock assessments, assigning session homework, communicating with the instructor, needing extensive session prep, etc.).

I got started teaching by helping my mother in her classroom. She is a K-8 teacher and always needed help setting up her classroom, running camps, grading papers, etc. I began tutoring when I was in highschool, mostly family members and friends, but in college moved into paid tutoring for the University as well as privately. This continued into graduate school, where I tutored peers and occassionally held review sessions for the first-year classes. Now I teach as an adjunct professor at a college!

I have worked with all kinds of students! They range in age, interests, and passion for science. Some love science and just need that extra boost to get an "A", some struggle with it a lot and are trying to get a "C" or better to pass, some just taking it because it is a requirement for university, some going into health or research careers. I have tutored students ranging in age from about 8 to 26!

I would never criticize a student because of their goals for their academics; my job is only to support them as they reach that goal and push them a little bit to better their understanding.

Well, a personal recent event I am fond of is that I am about to become an aunt for the first time!

Professionally, I had a student leave me a review that I gave "really great, understandable examples" and that I was "easy to approach and ask questions."

Look for their teaching experience and tutoring experience! A lot of people in my field are so incredibly smart, but struggle to convey information to others. They just "get" it! I was never that student, so I understand the studying struggle! Another thing I would look for is experience in teaching the SPECIFIC topic you are looking for- Biology is a big field, and just because I can teach you about the human body doesn't mean I can teach you about plants!

What do I want out of this relationship?

What kind of support am I looking for? Am I expecting?

How long will I need this assistance? Just on and off as a resource when I find topics that I struggle with, as a help when studying for exams, or consistently through the duration of the course?
