Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Every new student will start with a free consultation. We will meet over zoom, skype, or another platform and discuss your goals and needs. The aim is to tailor a learning plan specific to you. It's important for me to know your reason for studying, your experience with English, and any learning difficulties you might have.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I am a trained TEFL teacher and I tutored through high school.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I charge 10$ or equivalent per lesson.
How did you get started teaching?
I started teaching as part of the IB CAS system. I had a group that fluctuated between 3 and 10 students.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with all types of students. Mostly, I've taught age ranges of 13 to 20. All have had different levels of familiarity with English. Some of my students have started with knowing just a few words and others have been native speakers.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
In October I was tutoring a high schooler through her introduction to Shakespeare. She had been having trouble understanding the complexity of the language. And by the time she started with me, she was so frustrated. She saw it as a dull dead, boring text. In our first session, we started going through the various techniques that bring Shakespeare to life. As soon as she understood it she was able to laugh at his comedy and follow the flow of the language. She got very involved in the characters. It was nice to help someone find meaning in the language.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
I would strongly suggest hiring someone you can connect with. I have noticed some teachers in the field infantilize students based on cultural or ethnic differences, or simply for making mistakes. Do not tolerate this. You are worth more.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
I'd like my students to get to know the learning style of a new student. It helps me if you can think about certain problems you face when it comes to learning or speaking. What makes it hard to study? When do you find it hardest to study? Do you feel confident or shy when speaking English? Can you think of examples? Is there anything you find hard to understand? These are the general things I want to get to know.
