Being Bilingual Is Beautiful!
About
Learning another language doesn't have to be dreary and dull!! I've been teaching Spanish and English (ESOL) for over fifteen years and my students actually enjoy their classes with me. We laugh, tell stories, and have a great time while making real progress toward fluency.
Interacting with my students and helping them learn the language skills they need to communicate effectively is a great job! I build individual relationships with each student and customize my instruction to their specific goals. I've been teaching ESOL and Spanish for over 15 years and I still love it. Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
In our first class, I will ask you questions to assess your level of fluency, determine your priorities for learning, and discuss what approach will work best for you. After that, I'll identify the materials and instructional style that will be most effective for your needs.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I hold a BA in Spanish from Guilford College. I have lived and travelled extensively in Mexico, and I've held many bilingual jobs over the last 30 years. I taught 2nd and 3rd year Spanish in a private school for two years, and I currently work part time as an online instructor for an internationally known language school where I teach both Spanish and English (ESOL). I've been a tutor for over 15 years and my students consistently demonstrate improved grades and fluency.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
My normal hourly rate is $35, with an increase of $5 per each additional student.
How did you get started teaching?
My first "official" teaching job was in a private school in Virginia, where I taught Spanish II and III to high school students from 2004-2006. Since that time, I have worked with 200+ students as an online instructor and/or tutor. I'm a natural teacher and my students frequently tell me that I'm able to explain language concepts in a way that makes sense to them. I am very patient and encouraging, offering a lot of positive reinforcement and praise, and I always use humor and creative ways of helping my students understand the material and feel comfortable using it.
What types of students have you worked with?
Over the years, I have worked with a wide variety of students, from teenagers to professional adults. I customize the instruction to the student's needs and interests, and am always looking for new sources and techniques to draw from.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Be very clear about your goals and objectives. Communicate to the teacher exactly what you want to learn and how you will use that new knowledge. Do you want to pass a course, be prepared to travel abroad, improve your ability to talk with family/friends/neighbors, or advance your career? These are just a few of the many possibilities. Be sure to give your teacher feedback about the lessons -- what was really effective for you, and what was not so great? Do you want to focus more on conversational skills, or on your ability to read and write your target language?
