I have more than 20 years of experience in higher education, teaching writing classes at the college level and directing a tutoring program, and I specialize in personalized, one-to-one learning strategies.

I'm inspired by the moments of discovery and growth that can occur when two people focus their attention on a task together. True learning isn't just about working hard (though that usually helps). During the 2022-2023 school year, John tutored our two children (junior and freshman in high school). John quickly got to know our children during their separate sessions and built a strong rapport with both of them. Our children are very different types of learners, and John found ways to successfully engage and support each of them. Our daughter said, He is so flexible and willing to adjust what we are working on to what we actually need help with. We set the agenda together. He also really values our ideas and takes the time to ask us what we think. Our son explained, He helps walk me through things instead of just telling me how to do something. Sometimes thats harder in the moment because I have to think more, but then when I go to do something on my own on a test or for an assignment, its much easier. I have really learned how to do the things he has shown me and I am much more confident that I can do them on my own. As a parent, John has been incredibly professional. He communicates about schedule, billing, student progress, and shows a genuine interest in our kids well-being and success. What is your typical process for working with a new student?

In our first meeting, we'll make some decisions together about what approach works best for you. I'll want to get to know some things about you and how you typically get your work done. From there, I'll help you set some goals, and we will develp a specific plan for going forward.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I have a PhD in Composition and TESOL (Teaching Enlgish to Speakers of Other Languages), and I have more than 20 years of experience directing tutoring programs and working one-to-one with students in a higher education setting. This is what I do!

What types of students have you worked with?

I work with students from high school through college and graduate school. I also work with adult writers on personal and professional projects.
