How did you get started teaching?
I hold a Master's in Teaching and have over 20 years as a teacher, tutor, and coach.
Although, I got started in teaching because I am the oldest child and loved helping and teaching my younger siblings with their schoolwork. I also tutored throughout high school and college, and have been doing it ever since!
What types of students have you worked with?
It would be easier to list what types of students I have not worked with because I have worked with such a variety!
I have taught, tutored, and coached people of all ages, including children, teens, and adults. I have worked with special needs learners as well as gifted learners.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I have great memories of a "color run" where participants each get color packets and they walk or run a short marathon, from 1 mile to 5 miles. During and after the walk / run, the participants get to throw the powder all around and it was so beautiful! All the amazing colors, the laughter, and the togetherness was magical.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
I recommend a student speak with at least two to three, minimally, tutor candidates before choosing one. If the student is a child, I recommend the parent speak with the tutor first, and if the tutor passes the parent screening, I suggest the parent set up a 3-way call with the tutor, parent, and teacher for the final interview.
The initial call, or calls, can really help make a match!
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Students should think through what they believe are their challenges, but also what they think are their strengths as well. A good teacher can quickly begin to assess these things but the student may want to share some of their concerns as well.
