About
Do you remember not being able to do long division?
Perhaps you remember not being able to do some activity, but you now take it for granted? I can think back to each time I learned a new revelation and I love the feeling. The only thing I love more is helping others to have the same experience. My first session with a new student is free. Try my style of teaching and see for yourself.
I look forward to helping you out.
I often reflect back on my own revelations in learning. When I first learned how to simply organize my essays, my mind was blown. I saw a new world open up before me. I felt an overwhelming sense of increased ability and pride.
Now, as a tutor and teacher, I revel in watching others have the same experience. I love to help as much as I can. Seeing you succeed is how I succeed.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Listening. I start by listening to you, the student, while I learn how to approach the situation. I also, where appropriate, listen to the concerns of the parents of my minor students. All too often assumptions are made when the tutor fails to hear first the concerns that truly need to be addressed. To prove this, I do not charge for the first session. I want you to know what you are getting before money is concerned. Your needs must be taken care of at every turn. Try my services. You will not regret the time you spend with me.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I developed my love for teaching during my decade in the United States Marine Corps. I transitioned to tutoring at a community college while I attended George Mason University. I currently work at a Northern Virginia school district as a high school English teacher. I possess a graduate degree in secondary education with a concentration in English. Years of informal and professional tutoring have helped me hone my personalized style of education. I also have an approachable manner that many others in my field lack.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
You can expect a value of $50 for my services. However, I typically charge $40-ish. I charge less for things that I enjoy (like essays) and more for grammar. I will work with your budget, but know that you will get my best work each and every session!
How did you get started teaching?
It was started when I was in high school but I failed to recognize it for what it was. I had wanderlust and sought out adventures in life. I found myself in the military where I excelled at teaching my peers. After my career in the military, I turned directly to my latent passion- teaching English. I love helping others find their voice and find creative ways to captivate their reader's attention.
What types of students have you worked with?
In my time, I have worked with all manner of students from 16 and 17 year-olds conducting dual-enrollments at the community college to 75-year-old retirees that just wanted to improve themselves. I have worked with ESL, people of differing abilities, and the gifted. I particularly love working with ESL/ESOL students. What a great experience!
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I recently was blessed with my first child. A son, named Ollie. I cannot start to tell you the trial my family went through when he was born! Twenty-four hours after he was born, I was admitted to the ER for sepsis. It was life-threatening and I was hospitalized for the first 3 months of my son's life while my wife bared the brunt of raising him alone; as a new mother. Every time they visited me at the hospital was a miracle. I will cherish those memories and I regularly look back at the picture of the time to relive those wild emotions. The small smirks and smiles, the cooing or a big yawn. Holding him in my arms was beyond a proper explanation. And now a year later, I am still blown away by his curiosity and joy in just the mundane activities that I would otherwise take for granted. I love my family!
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Ask for discounts. It never hurts to ask, right?
Be clear with what you are looking for. If you do not know what you need fixing, how will I?
Please have the instructor's instructions available for me to review.
I highly encourage you to have made a good-faith effort at working through the issue. In this way, we have your words to work through.
Be in a quiet/private area away from others and distractions.
Bring your smile. I will keep you entertained as we work through it together!
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
This is not an easy question to answer because many (or most) student's do not know what question to ask. But I do empathize with this situation. Always do your best to have a positive relationship with your instructor (participate, show up on time, etc.), and when these questions arise you can rest easy knowing that the instructor thinks highly of you regardless of your academic performance. You trying your best is all that can be asked of you. Once you have tried, show your work to the instructor and ask for guidance. This is how I made it through my academic difficulties.
