About
I have always had the passion of working with children. As such, over sixteen years ago when I had my first child, I started thinking hard on how I could spend some ‘mommy time” with him while enriching his personal development. Three years later our twin boys arrived. At this point, the urge to leave corporate America where I had worked for over 25 years as a certified public accountant, became intense. I started researching various educational enrichment programs for children: Xcel was born!
In working with students, we dive in with the student to build their foundational knowledge of a subject matter as well as teach them new topics (ahead of the school work) so they feel much more comfortable when they are working with peers at school. It gives me great joy to see the student's eyes light up once they have understood a new concept. I see education as the "food" for the mind and soul!
Having had responsible positions in the field of human resources, project & human change management and support services with an additional ten years as a Certified Public Accountant, Project Management Professional as well as an Agile Certified Practitioner, I offer a unique combination of skills that would add value to developing/assisting students in our care.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
We start with an "ice breaker" to get to introduce myself as well as get to know the student. I want to understand their learning style so I can adjust my teaching style accordingly.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have MBA in general business administration. I have worked in corporate America for over 25 years in Accounting, HR and project management roles. Included in these roles I had to create and train associates/employees. While in college, I also tutored Accounting to Freshmen. I just enjoy impacting knowledge to others. I have several certifications:
-
Certified Public Accountant (CPA); Washington, District of Columbia
Project Management Professional (PMP) / Agile Certified Practitioner (PMI-ACP); Project Management Institute
CRISC (Risk Management) / CDPSE (Privacy); ISACA
Certified Employment Benefits Specialist (CEBS), Compensation Management Specialist; International Foundation of Employee Benefits

How did you get started teaching?
I have always enjoyed teaching...while I was a Junior in highschool, I was coaching Freshmen and sophomores on Math and English. Also, during my college days, I coached incoming students on Accounting. While in corporate America, I conducted HR training for assigned teams as well as financial accounting training.
Teaching has been part of my fabric!
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students from Pre-School to High School.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I had a 4th grader student who did not know her multiplication tables. She is not confident of what she knew but with hard work after 6 weeks she commited the multiplication tables (from 1 - 12 times) to memory. She was so happy with heer accomplishment and I was so PROUD of her. This made her like Math and is exceling now in 5th grade.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Have an open mind, learning is FUN, give it your BEST shot because it will open doors for you!
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Students should think through of just one (1) thing they would like to learn / improve on during their learning session with the teacher. Focus on it but have fun while learning.
