Michael Vercillo
About
I find I am able to get to know students as learners quickly and help them figure out what tools they need to find the success they are looking for, whatever that may be.
I enjoy helping students build their confidence as learners and finding ways to make mathematical thinking applicable to their lives regardless of their interest in math itself.
My approach is very student-focused. I work with my students to build their skills, hone their conceptual understanding, and develop problem solving skills that are applicable across disciplines.
A reference from a former colleague:
I know Michael Vercillo well as a colleague and as an academic tutor with a specialty in mathematics support. Michael worked at the Putney School for a number of years and taught mathematics courses ranging from algebra to calculus. He also worked in the tutorial center of the school providing one on one support for students seeking support for their classwork. Michael is very patient when working with students and uses a variety of techniques and hands on approaches to meet a student’s level of understanding. He achieved great results with Putney School students and many came regularly specifically to work with Michael. I know Michael will help students measurably in developing mathematical confidence and competence.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I like to begin by asking students about their past relationship with math. Do they love it? Hate it? Somewhere in between? What goals does the student have when it comes to math? Understanding how the student relates to the subject helps me to more effectively guide their learning.
I will then ask them if there's anything I ought to know about them as their tutor, reminding them that they will have lots of opportunities to tell me things as they think of them over time.
Usually we jump right into homework help, or whatever else the student may need help with, right after that.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been doing private tutoring work for 14 years, and I have worked as a classroom teacher for 7 years. I have a solid knowledge of typical high school math curricula.
I have a BA in Math and Statistics from Williams College.
