Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Establish short- and long-term goals for learning in Science course(s). After, I gauge what the student's skills and knowledge are and then what areas they can improve in. I like to incorporate a summary or mini lesson of what is being studied, then slowly work through problems as students become more confident and independent.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Current Science teacher in an independent school with a state license and Master's degree. Years of tutoring experience. Bachelor's degree in chemistry.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
$60/hour per lesson. I dedicate myself toward helping my students learn and thrive, not just survive. Time is precious and I believe this is fair pricing for my expertise, experience, skills, and dedication.
How did you get started teaching?
I found a passion for chemistry in high school because I had an amazing chemistry teacher who taught so engagingly. From there, I wanted to impact students in the same way and decided to study education in college and beyond.
What types of students have you worked with?
Middle school, high school, and college students of all abilities.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I worked with three high school students on their honors chemistry final exam for multiple sessions a week. All three students had different skills and levels of understanding, but all three were able to take my teaching and fill in their gaps to do very well on the test.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Look for someone who will not only guide you through work, but will teach to your learning gaps and allow opportunities to slowly become more independent in solving problems and practicing skills. A tutor is important for a student to become independent, which reaches far beyond helping to find one or two answers.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What can I do right now? What skills of mine can be stronger? How do I learn best (I.e., visually, orally, experientially, etc.)?
