Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
The most important step would to have a conversation with the parent(s) to hear exactly what they would like to accomplish with/for their child -
What subject(s) are they interested in? Would they prefer tutoring to be in person, on the phone or over the internet? How frequently and for how long would they want the sessions to be?
From that conversation, we would be able to come up with a game plan for me to help their son or daughter.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
BA History from Middlebury College
Certificate to Teach AP European History from LaSalle University
Certificate to Teach AP Econonics from Davidson College
Instructor at all types of independent schools since 1997 (boarding, day, co-ed, all-boy, all-girl)
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
It can vary depending on the subject (AP/Honors level or not) as well as whether or not travel is necessary.
How did you get started teaching?
As a former boarding school student, I became an independent school teacher myself the year after I graduated from Middlebury College.
What types of students have you worked with?
For over 20 years, I have worked with students/families from all socio-economic backgrounds.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
This past summer, when the country began to come out of the stringent "lock-down" status due to COVID-19, I was contacted by nearly a dozen former students who wanted to meet for lunch and/or dinner. Out of all the people that they could have chosen to meet up with, I was thrilled that several wanted to get together with me...
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
The most important consideration is your comfort level with the prospective instructor/tutor. It is absolutely vital that you and your parents feel comfortable with and have an excellent rapport with him or her.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
How will the tutor adjust his or her instruction when a student continues to be confused by topics? Your instructor MUST be able to find multiple ways to "get the point across" because students understand topics/concepts in different ways and at different speeds - there is no "one size fits all" when it comes to effective teaching/instruction.
