I am currently an Elementary Literacy Coach for FCPS. Before I became a Reading Specialist, I taught Language Arts for grades 1, 5, and 6 for six years. I love teaching reading at all ages, but my true passion is helping older elementary school/middle grade readers bridge their gaps in literacy.

I have a Masters degree in Elementary Education from JMU and am currently finishing my Masters in Reading Education from UVA. I am trained and certified in the Orton Gillingham approach to phonics. My instruction is firmly rooted in the Science of Reading.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

During our first session I will spend some time getting to know your student. I will assess their current phonological awareness, phonics skills, and language comprehension. These assessments will give me a good idea of where to start and how frequently we may need to meet.

How did you get started teaching?

I grew up with a passion for teaching and followed that calling through college. I have channeled that passion more specifically towards literacy and reading after working with so many struggling older readers. I am eager to help as many kids crack the code of reading as I can, to help them be the readers they've always wanted to be.

What types of students have you worked with?

My experience is with students ages 5-12. I have worked with varying abilities, strengths, and English language levels. I have provided intervention for students at all reading levels K-6. I have also provided enrichment and extension services for high achieving students to help keep them ahead of the curve. I am open to working with all.
