As a teen I worked with after school programs. I enjoyed it so much that I decided that teaching was the life for me. I started taking educational courses in college to see if I would enjoy teaching and the rest is history.
I have worked with every type of student. Students are all unique and special in their own way. I have worked with special needs students who require a bit of extra help and also students who are accelerated.
I am comfortable with students IEP's and 504 plans and use them to aid in the tutoring plan of action.
I have been working with a student with a specific learning disability who disliked science very much. It is easy to see his growing to love the subject with each lesson that I present.
I would ask them a few questions, getting progressiely harder and see what the response to each question is like.
Some people know content but do not understand how to communicate that information effectively. It is important that a tutor be approachable and that you can understand the information that they are presenting.
They need to know and say exactly what concepts they are struggling with.
Often students are afraid to ask for help because they are afraid of being wrong and it compounds over time until they are totally lost.
