About Me:

I have held educational leadership roles throughout my teaching career, such as Local Screening Chair (committee member in qualifying students for special services) and Special Education Lead (overseeing the special education department). I teach various students with disabilities and implement research-based reading interventions. I have successfully case managed, mentored, and tutored students with dyslexia to ensure their academic success. As a continuing educator of 12 years I work with many students who demonstrate emotional regulation, anxiety, depression, and stress challenges. I have a passion for supporting these students and finding innovative strategies and techniques to target their area(s) of need and for them to transform into resilient individuals. This passion inspired me to become a certified and licensed Resilience Building Mentor and Certified Coherence Intervention Practitioner through the HeartMath Institute. My certifications through the institute allow me to teach students and adults research-based scientific techniques to improve their overall self-regulation and performance through heart coherence.

My daughter has been working with Mrs. Phelps for almost a year and as a parent I see the growth my child is making. Not only is she making growth in her sessions, but she is able to apply those skills in her classroom, which her teacher notices. What is your typical process for working with a new student?

During your student's first Orton-Gillingham session, I will conduct an initial reading and writing assessment to determine your student's current academic performance and where to begin instruction. After the initial assessment, I will review the results and set targeted instructional goals for your child to achieve. After assessing the student's reading performance, I will notify you of session recommendations. About Resilience Reading (Orton-Gillingham) Sessions: Heart of Synergy has developed a resilience reading process. The process teaches students to access heart coherence before their reading session begins. The heart coherence techniques scientifically enhance students’ memory, focus, and academic performance and help self-regulate depleting emotions they may experience while reading. Students enjoy implementing these strategies using biometric technology because they can see the techniques working in the moment. Many students with various learning needs have reported an increase in their ability to learn and maintain attention during reading instruction when prepping with heart coherence.

How did you get started teaching?

I received my undergraduate degree in Special Education from Bowling Green State University in 2012. After graduation, I began her career as a special education teacher at Charles County Public Schools in Maryland, then relocated to Fairfax County Public Schools in Virginia. In 2017, I received my graduate degree in Educational Leadership with a concentration in Special Education Leadership from George Mason University. In 2023, I received my graduate certificate in Applied Behavior Analysis from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology.
