About
Hi! I'm Corey, with Just Math Tutoring! I lead a team of tutors that love math! I have been tutoring upper-level math for 20+ years. I have a bachelors in Chemical Engineering and a Master's in Education with a concentration in Mathematics. I am a former HS STEM Engineering teacher and I teach students how to systematically break down problems and learn underlying concepts so they can understand what the problem is asking! The goal of every session is to make sure the student understands how to approach and attack the problems so they will gain confidence in solving math problems.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
It normally depend what the students needs are. If they student is there to improve grade to an "a" then I assess them to see where their problems are or look at their tests.
If the student is there because they are in danger of failing then I start from the fundamentals of the subject to make sure they understand those concepts. Then I work my way up. Because we live in VA, the SOL released test are always a good way to assess student's understanding.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I started tutoring elementaray students during my sophomore year of college. I continued tutoring every semester through graduation.Once I graduated I was asked by a friend if I could tutor his daughter and I didn't know what to charge. So he helped me out and I have been tutoring now since 2004.
I also was an High School Engineering Teacher for a local STEM Academy for 4 years. Engineering is really just applying math to some science based subject.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Yes...I try to keep it simple.
Grade Level Math (under Pre-Alegebra):$40
Alegebra I, II, Geometry:$50
Trigonometry, Statistics, Pre-Calculus:$60
How did you get started teaching?
I was working for General Motors and the company closed down and so I had a love for math so I started tutoring math to High School Students. It eventually turned into a full-time teaching job.
What types of students have you worked with?
I work with all students above grade 4. Normally before that greade, Math is not stressed. I tutor a wide range of students. I have students that have scored perfect on ACT/SATs. I also have students that are in danger of failing a math subject and need intervention. Whatever the needs are the students are I normally can help.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I had a 5th grade student that really hated math. She would get so frustrated that she would cry during our sessions. After 6 months of tutoring, she passed her SOL, which she had never done previously. The next year she went on to get an "A" in math and has progressed each year. I was so excited for her.
