About

Hi, I'm John Varela, a programmer with a bachelor's degree in computer science from Georgia Tech, and I'm dedicated to helping students succeed in math and computer science. As a recent college graduate, and someone who is always trying to learn new things in my spare time, I still know what it is like to learn about unfamiliar topics in math and computer science. I also have the practical experience of working as a programmer, which has kept my skills sharp and given me a better understanding of how the material I learned in school can be applied outside the classroom.

My goal is to use my understanding of what it is like to be a learner along with the knowledge and experience from my degree and career to help students succeed in math, computer science, and other related subjects. I want to help others understand these fascinating subjects better, and hopefully even inspire some students to pursue careers or further education in STEM fields.

I began learning how to program just before starting high school, which led to my interest in math and computer science that continues to this day. It was because of this interest that I majored in computer science and became a programmer.

I enjoy tutoring because it gives me an opportunity to help students understand the topics that I find fascinating. With that better understanding, I hope my students will be able to access some of the same education and career opportunities that I had, if they are interested in studying math, computer science, or any related subject more seriously in the future.

Frequently asked questions

I have a bachelor's degree in computer science from Georgia Tech, and took many courses on computer science, math, and programming as requirements for that degree. I also chose to specialize in theoretical computer science as part of my degree requirements, which means that I took more advanced math courses than would normally be required for a computer science student.

I also have experience working as a professional software developer, which has kept my math and computer science skills sharp since graduating. This also means that I have more than a strictly academic understanding of the subjects I tutor, so I can help students understand how knowledge of those subjects can be useful beyond a classroom setting.
