The Intellect Architect
About
I am a 10-yr teaching veteran of the sciences.
I have experience teaching grades 6, 8 and 9-12 in the following subjects: Earth Science, Physical Science (I currently teach this subject), Ecology, Environmental Sciences, AP Environmental Sciences.
I am also qualified to tutor General Biology, Chemistry, Math 6, Math 7, Math 8, Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1 and Geometry. (My students are usually in Math 8 and up. Many calculations in Physical Science classes require math skills aligned with Math 8-Algebra 1. I frequently coach students lacking those skills.)
I find many students simply need to confidently learn academic vocabulary in order to understand concepts. I love to build confidence by breaking information to bite-sized pieces, then helping students piece together concepts. Much of the time, they understand some things. There's just a step or 2 keeping them from seeing the whole picture.
During a session, I would want to explore what the student is thinking. Then, we would tackle what skills/tools they need to successfully complete homework and be successful in class.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Relationship building is important before any student can begin to open up and learn with a teacher. I will ask your student a few getting to know you/checking-in questions each sessions in order to gauge who they are.
I will also listen to your student describe what they do not understand about the homework, classroom lesson or subject.
I find students who are missing skills in reading comprehension/understand question prompts, academic vocabulary are often unable to adequately explain what they do not understand. If this is the case, a session will consist of reviewing academic vocabulary. Understanding what the teacher is asking in an assignment/question prompt and using resources to construct proper responses. (This can be done with assigned homework. Or, I can give example questions based upon what the student is currently learning.)
If a student is having issues with mathematical skills, we will work by first reviewing academic vocabulary and the purpose of solving the mathematical problem. Many times, a student simply does not know where to start. They often have a general grasp of the process but need to understand why each step is necessary.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I am a middle school teacher currently certified in General Biology 6-12 and Middle Grades Science 6-8. Past certification held in Chemistry 6-12.
