About
I am a skilled and understanding teacher that loves to engage with students to aid their learning. I am currently a teaching assistant for an advanced histology course. This course has challenging concepts that I must teach and help students to understand. I recently encountered a student who was really struggling to grasp my descriptions of tissues and could not find things on his microscope. After spending hours of one on one time with this student we realized that he was color blind: making tissue identification on a microscope very difficult. He was oblivious to his condition until challenged by this course. After this realization I spent extra time with him on every lecture to find unique ways to teach the information and accommodate his challenge. I will spent the necessary time learning each specific need of my students to enable myself to give tailored lessons that will best help them as individuals.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
My priority is getting to know the students so that I can teach in a way that suites them. Once I get to know a student and we feel comfortable working together then I can teach more effectively, and they feel much more open to asking questions and expressing their frustrations.
My second priority in teaching a new student is making sure I have the material they need to learn mastered myself. I will review and reteach myself each concept before I teach them to others.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I am a pre-med senior at Brigham Young University. I have a 4.0 and have taken many rigorous science courses. My success in my coursework shows that I am proficient in the material I will teach.
I am also a Teaching Assistant for an upper-level histology course. As such, I teach a 3-hour lecture/lab once a week. I have been in this position for 1 year now and I love it. I enjoy getting to know and working with new students each semester.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
The first lesson is FREE! After the initial lesson I charge $25 per hour I spend tutoring, including travel time.
How did you get started teaching?
As a pre-med student I have always followed the philosophy of observe, learn, teach. My whole undergraduate college career has been full of me teaching and being taught by my peers as we study.
I gained a passion for teaching when I became a teaching assistant for my histology class.
I also give 1-on-1 house lessons, which has given me view of teaching outside of academia.
What types of students have you worked with?
My employment has allowed me to teach mainly college students, but I have provided tutoring help to high school aged family members.
I also volunteer with autistic children as part of their equestrian therapy. Here I teach horse lessons and work with students with disabilities. This experience is the highlight of my week.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I recently took the MCAT. I studied 12 hours a day leading up to the test and many more hours before then. I learned the value and importance of persistence in my study habits and techniques.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Find a teacher you can connect with and feel comfortable talking to. You will need to be able to share your difficulties and struggles with your teacher, therefore make sure you will feel comfortable doing so.
