Hello, everyone! My name is Dr. Jill Bartholomew. I am an experienced, certified tutor/educator and educational researcher. I am proud to offer individual tutoring and test preparation support services. I have over 20 years of teaching and tutoring experience in a variety of different academic and professional settings. My specialization is reading and writing. I have taught English Language Arts in traditional and online classrooms from elementary to university. I am TESOL-certified to teach ESL courses from young learners to adults. I have also taught ESL courses in the traditional classroom at the community college level. I have written professionally as a technical writer/editor and for the website www.randomhistory.com. I am qualified to tutor all core subjects K-12 and French Language and Literature. I also offer test preparation services for many standardized including the ISEE, SSAT, ACT, SAT, GRE, GMAT, and Praxis.

I believe that every student learns differently. Sometimes, a mainstream approach to education isn't the answer to helping your student become a lifelong lover of learning. What I love most about being a professional tutor is seeing the joy and excitement that a genuine connection to learning inspires. I believe that every student can learn and succeed. Every student learns a little differently though, and sometimes the teaching he or she receives in school doesn't match how the student learns best. A personal approach is key. I have found that discovering a student's learning style and creating learning strategies will hopefully help my students continue to learn and progress their entire lives. I love working with my students. I love being able to establish a close coaching relationship where I can cheer them on as they become more confident in their learning skills and abilities. I started Mad Wizard Tutoring in 2020 because I know there is a real need for an individualized, educational approach to our students' learning journeys.

    Frequently asked questions

    Here is my typical process:

    1. I like to have an introductory phone call or email chat when a parent decides to hire me to answer questions, introduce myself, and learn more about the parent and their student. 

    2. After the phone call, I will send out a learning questionnaire form asking for more specific details on the student's learning history, challenges, strengths, goals, and objectives for improvement.

    3. During the first session, I will spend some time (15-20 mins) getting to know the student, playing a game, icebreakers. Then, I will administer a placement/gap assessment to observe the student's style of learning and thought and problem-solving process. 

    4. The assessment will allow me to create a personalized learning plan that meets the student's learning needs and the parent's learning objectives. We will schedule future appointments from there. 

    I have a BA in French Language and Literature from the University of Michigan, a MA from Brigham Young University in English, and an EDd in Instructional Leadership from Northcentral University.
    I charge a rate of $50 per hour.
    I started as a writing tutor for the University of Michigan's Writing Center during my junior year in 1992. I taught English 115, Freshman Composition, at Brigham Young University as a graduate student from 2000-2002 in both traditional classroom and online environments. I have taught English in both upper elementary and middle school settings. I have taught English as a Foreign Language in Belgium as English as a Second Language in the classroom and online. I have taught individual English lessons with several online companies. Most of my students were Asian. I taught individual and group classes in writing, reading, and French conversation for Outschool. In 2000, I founded my company, www.madwizardtutoring.net, to specifically work individually with students in core K-12 classes as well as give writing instruction for post-secondary students through doctoral degrees.
    I have worked with students of all ages from elementary to adults, who are completing postsecondary education. I have taken a special interest in tutoring neurodiverse students for whom the standardized public school system is not working. I include coaching as well for students who struggle with executive function challenges.
    I am currently in the process of writing a phonics program for a company I contract with, Frog Tutoring. We are currently in a pilot testing phase, and I am tutoring a second-grader, using materials I developed. I could not be prouder of seeing his progress and being affirmed by comments from his mother and teacher.
    I would give the following advice to a prospective student or parent(s). 1. Choose a tutor who is familiar with growth mindset principles. He/she will treat you as an individual and can adapt methods and instructions that help you learn at your best. 2. Choose a tutor who has online experience, especially with current and emerging learning platforms and technologies. 3. Look beyond price. There are many tutors who will charge lower rates, but they may be young or inexperienced and have little experience with classroom education or tutoring. 4. Choose a tutor with whom you have, or can establish, good chemistry. You will learn best when you are working with a tutor who cares about you and creates a warm, comfortable learning environment. 5. Choose a tutor you can trust who is honest and has integrity. The best tutors will not just tell you "good job" all the time, but they will explain where you make mistakes and how to correct the mistakes.
    Question 1: What concepts am I struggling to understand? (e.g., English, Math, Science, Social Studies, or just in general). Question 2: Why am I struggling in this area? (Executive functioning? Falling behind and cannot catch up? Managing classroom workload? Assignments just don't make sense?) Question 3: What kind of tutor do I need? (Area of expertise or experience? Personality? Expectations?) Question 4: What should I expect from a tutor? (What do I do versus what does the tutor do?)
