About

I love Mathematics and teaching Mathematics, which motivated me to pursue a PhD degree in the subject. During my graduate study at Duke University, I served as a teaching assistant and taught as an instructor of record in Single Variable Calculus, Multivariable Calculus for Economists, Probability, Ordinary and Partial Differential Equations, and Matrix Algebra courses. In both roles, I always found my joy and happiness in assisting students to succeed in their studies. Students’ success is my ultimate goal in teaching.

As a then-student and an instructor, I have experienced and learned what it likes to not be able to fully understand a mathematical concept, to not be able to finish an assignment, or to receive an exam grade that is not as good as expected. To best help students achieve their goals, I first want to know their learning habits, struggles, and needs; then I can utilize my knowledge coupled with experience to guide them through the challenge.

As an instructor, I love to see students’ satisfaction and success in their learning. I enjoy the moment when ideas become clear for students; especially when students are delighted in understanding new concepts and techniques and being able to apply them and improve their problem-solving skills. As a mathematician, I enjoy sharing and conveying the power and beauty of mathematics to students and others.

I have tutored SAT, DAT, TSIA2, Pre AP-Geometry, Pre-Calculus, AP Calculus, AP Statistics, Calculus, and Differential Equations for students from tutors.com.

Thomas is a very professional and knowledgeable person. We worked together for almost three months during the summer. My tutor sessions with Thomas were so worthwhile! He is very calm and a thoughtful teacher about making sure you understand the material. He was able to work and solve any differential equation and linear algebra problem within minutes without difficulty.
Thomas has a unique way of breaking things down. He explained the problems step by step in a way for me to understand. He will review my work to ensure I had the correct solutions to my assignment problems and ensure I didn’t have any typo errors. He is patient and supportive, and he is always willing to help. He will respond to my emails or text almost instantly, and he was always available and keen to work with me through my assignments, even during his vacation time or when he was out of town.
He not only helped me through my assignments, but he explained the content so that I could comprehend the material, and I was able to work on the problems of my final exam on my own.
I would highly recommend Thomas to anyone interested in learning and comprehend better any material within the areas of his specialization.

Thomas was very flexible with my schedule as a working student and prepared detailed notes and lessons for topics that I mentioned I’d like to have covered. He helped me pass my college math entrance exam and has very good hourly rates. He is very friendly and willing to work with you and answer any questions you or your student may have about any topic.

Thomas tries above and beyond to help me understand the concept. I couldn’t t afford to add more minutes or hours to our tutoring session but he managed to spare 15 more minutes without charge. I am also very shy when wanting to ask questions but he always reminds me the importance of asking questions and asks me if I have questions without moving on to the other problem. He also knows his stuff and helped me understand problems even more by approaching the problem in multiple methods. He is very professional and is always sending me links to practice problems from the topics we have reviewed. I didn’t see any reviews on him when I first discovered him so I was a bit nervous on whether I should pick him to be my tutor but he set up a free consultation meeting where he discussed how I can be successful to passing the Dental Admission Test (DAT). We talked about my study plan, how each session will look like, and we went over some math problems so that we can both get an idea on how we work and on the exam. I would definitely recommend him!

    Frequently asked questions

I'd like to set up a free consultation meeting with a new student so that we can get to know each other as well as to address the student's needs and my offer, and make a study plan moving forward. I am also happy to do a study section demo during the consultation.

    No.

I worked as a tutor and a Teaching Assistant when I was an undergraduate student. Afterward, teaching has become an essential part of my graduate study and also my career.

Elementary, middle school, high school, and college students.

During the pandemic, I have experienced a transition in teaching modalities, from traditional face-to-face meetings to hybrid and fully online settings, which has caused my interest in being an online tutor.

A teacher should be patient and supportive to students.
