About
Hi everyone. I have been tutoring math to elementary and secondary students in Katy, Texas since 2018 and began my teaching career in the 90's. I love teaching math and watching light bulbs turn on when kids understand a math concept and its application. My primary focus is early education through 9th grade Algebra.
In addition to my tutoring, I teach Special Education Math Inclusion students in Lamar Consolidated School District where I also serve as Special Education Department Head. For the past 8 years I have taught in Texas public schools including 6th, 7th and 8th grade Math. I am Texas teacher-certified, with a BA from the University of Colorado, and Master's Degree from University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
My availablity incudes late afternoon, evening and Saturday sessions. I am willing to travel to your home, to tutor you in my home, or to create a virtual remote-learning tutorial with you. Virtual classes can be either 30, 45 or 60 minute sessions. It is my goal to always be as flexible as possible in meeting the needs of my students.
My rates are market competitive, I offer payment plans and a great variety of payment options (read more below in payment section). My rates are not the cheapest out there, but who really wants cheap when it comes to your math education. I have a proven track record as an educator, and verifiable results as a tutor.
I enjoy working with all kinds of students. I believe everyone is capable of doing math. Math should be fun.
There are lots of apps and websites to assist with tutoring. For example, I use whiteboard.fi as an interactive learning application to help students work- out problems that they can then share with me. This communciation tool allows me to instruct students from a distance in a highly effective manner.
Once I learn your learning style we can put together a master plan to attack any deficiencies, master concepts, get those grades up, learn better math test-taking strategies, and study-discipline.
Math takes practice and commitment, with realistic goal- setting we can accomplish your goals together.
When I am not working I enjoy travelling. This past 2020 summer my daughter and I tent-camped at the Grand Canyon and 5 National Parks in Utah. One of my profile pictures shows me at our Grand Canyon camp site enjoying morning coffee, as I proudly display my George Junior High coffee mug from our beautiful Arizona campsite.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Typically I like to build a relationship with a student by getting to know what they like to do in life outside of math. This helps me establish trust and a bond. Without this, tutoring is usually ineffective. Students have to want to work with their tutors or it is just a chore.
I try to build on students' math strengths and then really attack those skills that need further development. Repetition (e.g. multiplicatiion tables) helps to solidify skills, especially for younger age groups. A mini-assessment with each lesson helps to demonstrate understanding and ensure mastery of a topic.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Retired Certified Texas Teacher-George Junior High, Lamar Consolidated School District, 7th/8th grade Math Teacher for Special Education Students in the General Education setting.
Presently I tutor face to face students in Katy, late afternoons, early evenings, with multiple yearly client renewals.

How did you get started teaching?
I began teaching at Northeastern State University Oklahoma in 1990, fresh out of graduate school.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have taught college, high school, junior high, and elementary students, Special Education students including those with different abilities such as Autism, Aspergers, ADD, ADHD. You can read about some of my activities working with Special Education students in my blog "Sweethearts & Knuckleheads" on my Facebook link, and see some of my favorite faces on my Instagram page.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I sing in my church choir and Easter Service this year was especially powerful, to rejoice watching so many people come back to church, after a long hiatus due to Covid-19. It gives me great hope to see that we can beat this thing and get back to living our lives with joy and productivity.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Make sure there is a good fit betwen you and your tutor. You want to be comfortable with your tutor. Also realize that tutoring is a two way street. You want to be prepared to learn by having homework, quizzes, reviews, and questions ready for your tutor so you can get the most out of your session time. Likewise you expect and demand that your tutor is prepared for your lesson as well. Close each lesson by discussing expectations for your next lesson with your tutor.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Think about your personal learning style.... what works for you and what doesn't? What stimulates you to learn and what bores you? This will go a long way towards your tutor being able to design effective lessons for you.
