Edgar Chemistry Tutoring
About
Hello! Since 2018, I've tutored chemistry at a college for various courses that included introductory chemistry, general chemistry, and organic chemistry. As a premed student, I've found a passion in tying tough topics to real-world and medical applications for a true understanding of the various concepts that are taught. I look forward to meeting you and helping you achieve your long-term goals by providing assistance with any chemistry questions you may have. Thank you!

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
First, I'd kindly introduce myself and ask how I could help the student. I would assess the student's question by asking about basic concepts regarding the question. This will show if the student demonstrates adequate understanding to continue with the question. If the student does not demonstrate the understanding required, I will kindly suggest that we briefly go over other concepts to facilitate overall understanding of their question and not just the answer. I would provide encouragement and direct correction throughout the question to reinforce correct problem-solving methods. My support would come from verbally filling in problem-solving gaps. In turn, I would ask for the student's to verbally repeat their problem-solving method to reinforce proper understanding.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a medical humanities BA and double minor in chemistry and biology. My degree has served to teach me a deeper level of ethics and sociology with an emphasis to navigate through life with everyone's best in mind. My double-minor has allowed me to gain the knowledge necessary to begin tutoring successfully. I have now tutored for almost three years in higher education. This time period has included working as a supplemental instruction leader where I have hosted supplemental instruction sessions for chemistry students that parallels their lectures. I've gained great experience helping hundreds of students which include high school students, fellow premeds, and other pre-health professionals. Patience truly is a virtue and being in this line of work requires much of it. My work as a research assistant working with childhood development has taught me how to be more mindful of others and continue to be patient throughout various points in sessions.

How did you get started teaching?
I started by tutoring general and introductory chemistry at a community college. After learning upper division sciences such as advanced topics in organic chemistry, biochemistry, descriptive inorganic chemistry, genetics, and microbiology, I was able to apply those concepts to the fundamental courses. This led to a position in implementing a supplemental instruction pilot program where I hosted secondary lectures that paralleled the chemistry courses I was assigned to.
What types of students have you worked with?
I've worked with a diverse student population with grade levels as young as high school dual-credit students to undergraduate students. The students I've worked with have been of all ages and backgrounds as well as diverse career goals. One of my most memorable student encounters was working with foreign exchange student from Cameroon who I helped navigate through her chemistry courses while she helped me practice my conversational French.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Recently, I was able to help a good friend of mine score a top 10 percent score on his MCAT exam for medical school! He had not taken organic chemistry or biochemistry but I had been helping him by providing resources and assistance as need during his prep. I was ecstatic to hear his score and it felt encouraging to know I could help him out during a challenging test prep.
