About

Students who struggle in school often complete assignments without understanding the task. Reading a story, determining how to solve a word problem, completing computation problems, or organizing thoughts to write a cohesive paragraph can be an overwhelming experience for a student who struggles in school. For many students, the academic expectations create stress and undermine self-confidence, especially when the pace of learning is so fast.

Teachers are bound to a curriculum and a timeline. They are reviewed by how well students perform on assessments. As a tutor I am able to slow down the learning to teach at the student’s pace. Some students grasp a skill quickly while others need repetition and frequent practice of one skill before moving forward. I believe students should not move on until the foundational skill is mastered.

To learn, the student needs to be engaged. My teaching changes according to the learning style of the student. I tutor math, reading and writing to students in Kindergarten - 5th grade. My lessons are tailored to the needs of the individual. My objective is to grow self-confidence in each learner as skills are mastered.

I have worked as a teacher in the field of special education for 30 years. I have worked with students who have various disabilities in grades Pre-K through fifth. Developing relationships with students is the best part of my job. Assisting students with their learning can be challenging but is also exciting when they begin to understand a concept. I especially enjoy working 1:1 with students because that is when I can best provide the needed support.

Frequently asked questions

When working with a new student I attempt to build a relationship.  Determining strengths and weaknesses will enable me to determine the level of tutoring needed, but building the relationship will allow me to know the student’s interests and motivations, which will make our sessions more engaging.

I received my undergraduate degree in Special Education from Indiana University and my masters in Deaf Education from the University of Arizona.  I have worked with students in Pre-K-5th grade who are learning disabled, emotionally disturbed, intellectually disabled and auditorily impaired as well as children who are dyslexic, ADD and ADHD.  I have used programs to aid in basic reading skills and comprehension as well as various math programs that develop computation and math reasoning.  I have also implemented various behavior strategies to teach calming techniques.

My fee is $30/hour.

Find a teacher with whom you can connect.  A teacher may have the needed expertise, but if there is no connection then you will not want to learn from that teacher.  The teacher should have enthusiasm and be willing to listen to your academic struggles.
