About
Upon graduating from college, I taught high school English, speech, and drama. After home-educating my children, I returned to the high school English classroom, then moved to elementary and middle school reading intervention. I have found success in using traditional or classical methods to build reading strength, writing, and speaking skills in students of all ages. Spell to Write and Read by Wanda Sanseri was the foundation of my children’s early homeschool education. So, after observing so many students in the charter school where I taught stop reading aloud to say, “I don’t know that word,” I tested many of the lower performers and found that these ninth graders read at the 5th-grade level or below. I requested to use SWR for reading intervention at the charter school and helped bring students who were two grade levels behind advance rapidly using SWR principles. I began tutoring part-time using SWR in 2016 and full-time tutoring online using Zoom in 2019.
My son scored 35/36 on both the Reading and English sections of the ACT. This was the main factor in earning an $8,000 merit award at the University of North Texas Honors College.
A first-grader I tutored for two hours per week went from well below grade level to the A/B honor roll and earned Most Improved Speller and two other end-of-year awards (May 2017).
Several of my current students began reading at the Kindergarten level when they came to me in fifth grade, but now are reading fluently and becoming strong writers, and preparing for the college admissions exams. You can learn more at http://classicalstarttutoring.com.
My clients pay a base hourly rate of $55/hour paid monthly. Most pay $440 for two 55-minute sessions per week. A free 55-minute assessment is available in reading, grammar and writing, spelling, vocabulary, and reading comprehension, whichever two to three areas of the highest priority to the parent. Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
First, I get to know the reason the parent is seeking a tutor, then I administer a free reading assessment. We discuss what has been done to correct the issue. And I offer my suggestions for how to correct the problem.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
My bachelor's degree is in Secondary Education with majors in English and Speech/Play Directing. I have attended workshops by endorsed Spell to Write and Read trainers and have experience using Spalding/Sanseri direct instruction in intensive phonics with my own children, elementary and middle school struggling readers in a charter school in Texas. My private tutoring students and intervention students progress rapidly from two or more grade levels below their current grade. Usually, half of the small group students move from Tier 3 to Tier 1 in less than a semester.
Private tutees progress at a more rapid rate, some making twograde level advances in just two months.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
My clients pay for the month's sessions on the first of each month. I charge a flat rate monthly based on $55/hour for 4 weeks of tutoring.
