Chris Porter Tutoring
About
I'm a doctoral literature student at Texas Tech University with over 6 years of tutoring experience at both the college and high school level with an emphasis in SAT and ACT preparation and essay writing. I have a passion for teaching, particularly in one on one settings. While I'll be going to classes as well as teaching composition at Texas Tech, I will make your student a priority and work with you to find a flexible schedule and program to help your student achieve their goals.
I enjoy seeing my students gain or grow an appreciation for reading and writing. Language is a ubiquitous skill regardless of a student's life plan, and I love seeing a student gain pride and confidence in their skills, whether it's through improving their test scores, their critical thinking, or their writing abilities.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I onboard students typically with a diagnostic session that includes an interview with the student about how they feel about their current abilities, where they would like to improve, and what long term goals they have for their education. If the studen'ts goal is to pass a standardized exam, I will ask for a grade sheet from a recent practice exam or, if the student does not have one, give the students a practice exam in person so that I can better assess their ability to deal with the test format.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
As a university student, I worked for three years as a writing center tutor working in small groups, and with long-term students and walk-in students who were looking for help with a single essay. After graduation, I spent 3 years working as an exam prep tutor at Huntington Learning Center where I consistently received postive feedback and saw students improve not just their test scores, but their mastery of English and Writing in preparation for their college education. I have also worked as a standardized test grader fdor Pearson and have experience teaching college-level composition courses.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I typically charge $25 per hour.
How did you get started teaching?
I have always had a passion for literature and language, and I discovered my love of teaching as a tutor during my time as a student at McMurry University.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with a diverse range of students, including students with various learning disabilities which impeded their ability to manage time, read, and write. I work with students to create a system and curriculum that both fits their educational needs and remains engaging to them.
