Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I like to set up an initial consultation/session where we meet (either in person or virtually) to talk about goals and get a sense for each other's style/personality. From there, we can dive directly into content and academic support as well as setting up a regular cadence of meetings for long-term student goals.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a teaching certification in Science 8-12 (e.g Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science) and a Chemistry-specific certification. I have taught courses in Chemistry and Biology.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Price range $25-40
How did you get started teaching?
I began as an afterschool tutor and summer school teaching assistant working with students in Boston Public Schools before taking up a full-time teaching position in Dallas ISD. Having a strong teacher-support system has been one of the major factors in my academic success and I am proud to be that support person for younger generations.
What types of students have you worked with?
I've worked with diverse learners in the K-12 setting from Pre-AP teaching to teaching general education students and special education scholars. I started tutoring as an undergraduate back in 2009 working with elementary and middle school children for four years. I transitioned into the high school setting, supporting 9-12 graders for the past 7 years.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
One of my former students recently graduated from UT Austin! I was able to share in the joy of seeing her become an awesome young professional with a bright career ahead of her.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Look for a tutor with the heart of a teacher and a passon for their subject area! A person with the heart of a teacher will move at your pace and break down the trickier parts of the content for you. People who love their subject will infuse you with an appreciation for it (even if it is not your favorite subject)!
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
1) What elements of your current classes (e.g. activities, lessons, etc) do you enjoy/love?
2) What parts of the content do you find easiest?
3) What units of study or topics do you find most difficult?
4) Are your misunderstandings the result of having missed school or is the subject being taught in a way that is difficult for you to understand?
5) How much time (per week) do you devote to studying the subject, independent of the teacher?
