My name is Payton Hudak, and I want to help you succeed in school by building strong study habits and positive self-esteem. I am a certified Master Tutor through CRLA's International Tutor Training Program. I have 3 years' experience tutoring my peers, including ELL students, in college-level writing and 1 year tutoring advanced Spanish at Stephen F. Austin State University's award-winning tutoring program. Academia is a long, winding road, and it can be daunting to do it alone. I have experience with tutoring both native and non-native speakers in English essay-writing for college-level papers like synthesis essays and literature reviews. I am familiar with APA, MLA, and other standard writing formats. I also minored in and have a passion for Creative Writing, as well as Spanish.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?
The first session with a student is usually a time for us to get to know each other. I like to assess the student's current capabilities in the subject area, general learning habits, and expectations for our sessions, and I encourage the student to ask me anything that will help them decide whether we are a good fit. Getting a feel for the other person's personality and learning/teaching style is also important for both of us!
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a Bachelor's in International Communication and double-minored in Spanish and Creative Writing.
I am currently pursuing my Master's in Teaching English as a Second Language.
I am a Master Certified Tutor under the CRLA's International Tutor Training Program and have over 3 years of experience tutoring college students.
How did you get started teaching?
I started tutoring English Writing as a side gig during my undergraduate studies but fell in love with the feeling of making a difference for students from all backgrounds. I expanded into tutoring Spanish and now endeavor to dedicate my life to teaching English to speakers of other languages.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with straight-A students and students on academic probation, students from various states and various nations, students whose first language is English, Spanish, Vietnamese, Portuguese, and more. I have helped mentally and physically disabled students, non-traditional students with families and workforce experience, and many others.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Look for someone who makes you feel comfortable and capable of learning and doing the work. Someone who just gives you the answers won't benefit you in the long term, and could get you both in trouble.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Consider what you have already tried or are already doing, and the things that do and don't work for you, to save yourself a lot of time.
