I pride myself on my adaptive style. I prefer to work WITH students as opposed to thinking that I work FOR the student. Teaching requires a bit of a give and take between the person delivering the information and the person receiving. I try to enable my students to take control of their education and learning through a variety of means to hopefully bring them to a higher level of understanding and application.

I love watching folks learn. It's a great feeling to see someone that was struggling finally make a connection with material. History is one of the most "accessible" subjects, as just about everyone will come across a person, place, event, or concept that they can connect with on a personal level.

I prefer to first find out from the student what their situation is both with content and routine, and then either create a new plan or make adjustments to their current routine and methods. 

I have a B.A. in History with a minor in Western Intellectual Tradition, and have taught AP/Pre-AP US History for the past two years (with one year of Government & Economics).

I honestly didn't have a great "aha!" type moment for teaching. I became a substitute for my local school district as a first job right out of college, and it seemed to click with me. 

I've worked with students within all academic ranges of ability and dedication, and with students from all backgrounds.

Look for someone that is passionate about what they do. History, to me, is the art of academic story telling. If you've ever had someone read a story or passage to you, then you know how important it is to have someone who enjoys the story that they are telling.

I think a good idea is to have a goal or a set of goals. I personally don't like to work with students or other teachers that don't know what they want for themselves, or have a ballpark idea of what they need from me.
