I have known Ms. Kathy LaTour for 13 years and have interacted with her extensively in her capacity as a professor at Southern Methodist University and as a continued source of writing expertise. Ms. LaTour is a passionate teacher and accomplished writing coach who cares deeply about the quality of her work and the work of her students. I know this first-hand because Ms. LaTour was one of my writing instructors when I was a student at SMU from 2006 to 2007. As her student, I had no professional writing experience and very little confidence in my own ability. Ms. LaTour changed that. She makes time to meet with students outside of class and generously helps those working through challenges. An important aspect of Ms. LaTour s interactions with students is her use of real-world examples from her career and consulting work. In her class, Strategic Writing for the Nonp rofit, she taught us the art of creating meaningful communication materials for nonprofits. I was able to use those pieces in my professional portfolio, which led to a job offer at a highly-competitive communications consulting firm in Washington, D.C. Since that time, Ms. LaTour has mentored me through teaching my first writing class at SMU. The lessons she taught me 13 years ago hold true in my class today and I find immense joy in supporting students in the very same manner that she supported her students.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

I am an experiental writing coach. I will ask you to wrtie about specific events or people. You will learn to describe in a way that takes the reader to the moment instead of telling them about it. You will learn to interview people and get strong quotes that add to the story. You will learn about he structure of a story for the news or a magazine. While this may not be the kind of writing you envision for yourself, you will learn the most powerful way to become a good writer. Clear writing is clear thinking.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

In addition to a master's in communication, I have written feature stories for numerous publications about topics that impact our lives. I have also published two books, one about how to help children when they lose a sibling and a second about breast cancer that was published by a major New York publishing house.

I charge based on the needs of the student from $20 an hour to $30. The cost will be determined by the needs of the student and the complexity of fulfilling their goals.
