What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I begin a tutoring session by discussing the student’s current lesson at school, to determine strengths, weaknesses and or concerns. Once we’ve established a content goal, I review the necessary vocabulary, teach a mini lesson on the math topic, do a sample problem together with the student, then allow them time to practice independently. If needed, we can take a “brain break” and work on a fun, math related game or skill builder, then go back to reviewing useful, preferred strategies for breaking down a word problem into a diagram, chart or list of steps that lead to an accurate solution.
