About
I have over ten years teaching experience in a wide variety of settings, such as preschools, elementary classrooms, and a tutoring center. Those schools have ranged from public to private, well established to brand new, and conservative to progressive, which gives me a broad perspective on strategy and methodology. I am versed in different teaching and learning styles, and have worked with several children with special needs. I will work towards finding the best methods for working with the student, and will always keep their individual needs in mind.
I love working with kids in general, but tutoring allows me to help them gain new skills they will use for the rest of their lives. When I see a student master something that is difficult, I genuinely get excited for them and celebrate that moment with them.
Also, tutoring doesn't have to be boring or rigid; I get to be creative in how I work with a student. I make up games, create motivational tools, find alternative materials to use if traditional ones don't do the job. Like with any artform, teaching can lead to outcomes you didn't expect or plan for, so each session with each individual is like creating a piece of art. As long as I show up with the expertise, some open-ended materials, and an open mind, then the student will be engaged.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
First, I will have a conversation with the family to gather as much info on the student's struggles/needs. Then I'll meet the student and get to know them and their interests, all while assessing what exactly they need to work on, and what road blocks are in the way of their success.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have over 10 years of classroom experience with a wide range of ages, from 2 year olds to college aged. I earned my Masters in Early Childhood Education in 2015, and recently have worked at a highly successful national tutoring company that specializes in reading comprehension.

How did you get started teaching?
I first started full time teaching at an alternative elementary school in Memphis. I was in charge of curriculum and lessons for 4-8 year olds in all subjects. I then went on to earn my Masters of Arts in teaching with an emphasis in early childhood education. The rest of my career is summed up in my resume.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with all ages, from 2 year olds to college aged students. I obviously have had more experience with children 8 and under, but I am comfortable working with any age.
I have also worked with children on the autism spectrum, from mild to severe. I like working with them because I usually get a different perspective on my teaching skills or the content we're working on. Plus, they are fun to get to know!
In my experience, I have worked with a diverse group of students, whether you frame that by race, socioeconomic status, nationality, gender identity, or coming from conservative or liberal families. I am open to serving anyone, no matter their background or how they identify.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
One day I was tutoring a student and I asked him to draw his favorite animal while I prepared for the next activity and I would guess what it is. He showed me a squiggly blob with an eye, which did not resemble a common animal. Had I not watched a video the night before about this very animal, I might not have guessed it. But I knew immediately and shouted "cuttlefish!" I was so pumped that this coincidence happened. In our excitement we high fived and started going on about how amazing cuttlefish are. That was truly a great moment that I'll think back on fondly.
