About

At Calculating Minds we supplement school and home learning by teaching fundamental and enrichment math skills to students ages 4 and up. We work with children evolve their thinking about math problems, and approach problem-solving using a variety of innovative methods rather than simply producing the correct answer. Unlike many tutoring services, we don't rely heavily on technology to 'teach' math. Our students are actively engaged - taking notes, working with hands-on materials, discussing solutions and playing games.

Calculating Minds is a local business started by math teachers with over 50 years combined experience. We are located in Farragut, TN and work closely with the local school districts to support local teachers.

We can be reached at www.calculatingminds.com

One of our goals is to increase students’ math knowledge while boosting their math confidence. Seeing success written on a child’s face and hearing an enthusiastic ‘this is easy now!’ is, to us, the highest compliment!

They are such excellent teachers, and our kids have so much fun during their tutoring sessions while learning so much. They also have a token system that really motivates our kids to work hard! They are also very flexible with our schedules and personal needs of our family. They have also been very responsible and responsive regarding the COVID situation. A+ all around!!

Amy and Dee are excellent to work with! The atmosphere they have created is very warm and inviting. My son started as an eighth grader in pre algebra. Amy quickly got him up to speed and he will be taking Honors Algebra 1 as a freshman. We are so pleased with his progress. Thank you, Amy and Dee, for your care and concern for your students!

Amy and Dee are great! They work individually with my kids to make sure the content is what they need and their sessions are on target. They update me with progress and concerns on a regular basis.

    Frequently asked questions

We have the student complete a Math Snapshot diagnostic assessment.  We then determine at which level we will begin tutoring with each student.  Our program is student-driven -- we provide personalized tutoring either one-one or in small groups (no larger than 4 students).  We group students with similar ability levels together.   Our students attend once or twice per week and we also offer online classes.

We are certified math teachers with Graduate Degrees in Education.  We have over 50 years combined experience in teaching students from Kindergarten to High School.

One day per week:  $119.00 to $139.00

Two days per week:  $169.00 to $199.00

Both Amy and Dee, owners of Calculating Minds Math Learning Center, have been teaching for many years.  Dee started teaching in the 1980's and has loved it ever since!  She has taught every grade from Kindergarten through Eighth grade.  Amy has been teaching since the 1990's and has taught Pre- through high school students.

Our goal at Calculating Minds is to create a love of learning math and help students feel confident and develop a sense of accomplishment as they continue on their own learning path.

Pre-Kindergarten through high school students, including

    Special Needs Students.

    1. A great math tutor ensures that the student doesn’t just know a concept, but actually understands it.
    2. A great math tutor is student driven, not textbook driven.
    3. A great math tutor asks questions to determine individual challenges and strengths.

Great tutors identify their students’ learning styles and adjust their lessons accordingly, focusing on student understanding, not on textbook lessons.

Students should think about the way they learn best -- visually, kinesthetically, auditorally - and communicate that information with the tutor.
