About

I have spent the last 9 years working with student writers as both a college professor and a tutor, so I have helped every type of student at every level. My work history includes employment at Trident Techical College, College of Charleston, and The Citadel. Not only am I immensely familiar with the standards of college and college-prep writing, I also treat every client individually. This means that I discuss their fears and worries about writing, diagnose issues, and explain how to address those issues so that the student is empowered to improve their writing in the future.

I love drawing answers out of students themselves because it shows that they have a greater capacity for writing than they assumed. It's powerful to witness a student writer make an organic connection between ideas and suddenly make an intuitive leap to a solution! This kind of tutoring is not easy or simple, but I believe it leads to long-lasting learning and a joy in writing.

Frequently asked questions

I start any new session with just some basic get-to-know-you questions and tell a little about myself. Then I like to ask context questions about the student's background in writing, the kind of courses she/he is taking, and any concerns about writing. Then we dive into the specific assignment by reading the instructions together, discussing the purpose of the assignment, looking at what work the student has already started, and then deciding what part of the writing process we need to focus on for the session (prewriting, brainstorming, outlining, drafting, revising, etc).

I charge by the hour since that provides enough time to delve into writing but without exhausting the student.

However, not all tasks can be completed in a single hour, so if your student has multiple objectives (ex: researching, grammar, and organization) then it's best to make multiple appointments.
