About

As a special educator with over 30 years of experience working with students in both public and private schools as well as private tutoring in the Columbia area from first grade through college to evaluate reading and improve reading and written expression skills as well as coaching executive function deficit of students with diagnosed and undiagnosed attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. I work with students with and without diagnosed learning differences on standardized test-taking skills and those tests' reading and language portions. I am able to work with your child in your home, at the library, or via ZOOM to develop students who can read and build a love for reading through a variety of genres as well as develop their writing skills. I help students and families learn how not only to manage their symptoms of ADHD but excel in the classroom and beyond.

For the past 10 years, I have been working with students on Summer Reading, even if not assigned, as well as developing their writing skills to stop the summer slide.

Suzy is so knowledged and had some great tools/tricks for our smart boy with dyslexia. She treated him with respect and made sure to get to know his interests to make the extra tutoring time less of a chore. He actually enjoyed his time with her.
Suzy encouraged him and gave him the space he needed to think before giving him a hint. That is a frustration for him.... when others jump in with a hint or the answer before his brain can find the route he needs. Suzy asked him questions about how he thinks and respected his answers. She encouraged him to build on what he knows and that built resilience. She also was amazing in helping us (his parents) with resources we did not even know existed! I was able to go to the school district and request my son have access to these resources to support him in middle school. My son, who was behind 2.5 grade levels has made honor roll! We credit Suzy for being a part of building his confidence as a capable learner. We highly recommend Suzy! My son says, “Oh ya! If you need a tutor, pick Ms. Suzy!”

Frequently asked questions

For clients seeking Executive Function Coaching,  I ask that if a client has had an evaluation, that they share the results with me and then I like to meet with the parents and  the student to conduct a survey of executive function and gather information needed to work with them.

For clients seeking reading or writing assistance I ask for the reults of any evaluation they have received in the past, any concerns from the school, any samples of work, and then I conduct an intial assessment and I use all of this to determine the need for my services and how often I recommend services.
