As a retired teacher, with a Bachelor's degree in English, Masters degree in Lirarianship, and many years teaching in 4 year old lab school, School Librarian , Special Education Substitute and English teacher, I believe that I am well qualified as a tutor in all grades of public school. As a teacher certified in two areas, I held a Master's plus 30. One of my beliefs in education is that the individual student should be taught in the way he or she can best learn. Therefore, better ensuring success in mastering the subject, and boosting confidence in learning. Finally, as a Children's Librarian in public libraries, I learned the value of usin...

As a current college student studying Middle Level Education, former academic coach, and tutor for Respite Coalition, all K-13 material is still quite relevant and fresh in my mind. I am currently student teaching in a sixth grade English-Language Arts class. I get to know each student individually as well as get to know their personal goals. I will provide quick, concise responses with proper feedback for those in a hurry. As well as, slow, individualized teaching for those looking to understand the material on a deeper level. I welcome parent feedback and will alter my methods based on parental goals as well.

I use differentiated and personalized methods and strategies to meet the needs of all learners. I love to plan fun, interactive lessons for students. I tend to use the gradual release of responsibility in my lessons. I model as needed, then we work together as I scaffold your learning, and then you will work independently to show your mastery. I love to do hands on science lessons and leveled reading groups. I include a lot of word work, phonics and phonological awarenesss, as well as guided reading and shared writing. Technology integrations and literary or informational read alouds in every lesson! have been teaching in Columbia classroom

6 years in the classroom has given me experience to know exactly what skills are necessary and required for each child. I am able to vertically align to know the foundations required from previous years, and where your child's learning needs to grow. I am passionate about finding projects and real-world examples to make learning fun! The absolute best part about my job, is turning your child into a life-long learner. I want them to look around themselves in the world and create a learning opportunity wherever they are. Find things to play with or pull apart to learn how it works. Reviews for Columbia English tutors

Recent success stories from people in the Columbia area.
Mary K.
Suzy is so knowledged and had some great tools/tricks for our smart boy with dyslexia. She treated him with respect and made sure to get to know his interests to make the extra tutoring time less of a chore. He actually enjoyed his time with her. Suzy encouraged him and gave him the space he needed to think before giving him a hint. That is a frustration for him.... when others jump in with a hint or the answer before his brain can find the route he needs. Suzy asked him questions about how he thinks and respected his answers. She encouraged him to build on what he knows and that built resilience. She also was amazing in helping us (his parents) with resources we did not even know existed! I was able to go to the school district and request my son have access to these resources to support him in middle school. My son, who was behind 2.5 grade levels has made honor roll! We credit Suzy for being a part of building his confidence as a capable learner. We highly recommend Suzy! My son says, “Oh ya! If you need a tutor, pick Ms. Suzy!”
