Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I understand that math is pretty tough for many students and not everyone learns the same way, so I adapt my teaching style to match how I notice students learn best. I also have the tools to make tutoring remotely successful- I can provide recordings of our sessions which would have the digital whiteboard with our audio in the background. You can reference the whole session!
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a BS in Mathematics at the University of Houston and I have three of the actuarial exams under my belt. I'm a property and casualty actuary for MetLife which requires an extensive knowledge of mathematics and an ability to communicate these advanced topics to people in other departments.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I typically charge $35/hour, but I'm willing to work with the student to accommodate them as much as possible.
How did you get started teaching?
I've always tutored students throughout my college and professional life. Both of my parents are professors, which I attribute my ability and desire to help people succeed.
What types of students have you worked with?
Middle school through college.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I hiked the Appalachian Trail in 2016. It was the best experience of my life!
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Honestly, learn the "why" not the "how", I promise you will pass your class if you get this down!
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
How have previous teachers helped you understand content you've struggled with?
How have teachers overlooked your struggles?
