Dr. O's Mathematics Tutoring And Test Preparation
About
My name is Drake Olejniczak, Ph.D. I received my Ph.D. in Mathematics from Western Michigan University in April 2019. I have 4 years of classroom teaching experience and 8 years of mathematics tutoring experience.
My teaching philosophy can be summarized in three points:
I tutor to help my students learn how to learn. I aim for my students to not only succeed in their current course, but also to develop the skills necessary to succeed in future mathematics courses. I do this by teaching my students good study skills, how to ask good questions, and problem solving techniques. I understand that each of my students has their own learning style. This is why I spend time to get to know my students so that I can tailor my style to best complement their own.
I tutor to help my students discover the fun and interesting side of mathematics. Through my experience, students learn best when they are engaged and show genuine interest in the subject. While I do not expect my students to have this mindset at first, I aim for my students to develop mathematical curiosity and a positive attitude towards learning mathematics.
I tutor because I love teaching and learning mathematics. I have a passion for mathematics and mathematics education. This passion has led to both my own academic success and the success of many of my students. I demonstrate to my students that, while mathematics can be difficult, it can also be extremely rewarding. Whether a student is interested in mathematics as a career or sees it as a necessary hurdle to their success, I promise dedication to each of my students.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
During the first meeting, I aim to find out more about my student and what specific goals they want to accomplish as well as any specific hardships they have with learning mathematics. Depending on the length of the session and our discussion, we may start working right away on the student's goals. For the rest of the sessions, we will work on acheiving the student's goals that they laid out in the first meeting. Periodically, we will reevaluate goals and adjust for the specific kind of tutor style that works best.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Ph.D. in Mathematics, Western Michigan University. Spring 2019
B.S. in Mathematics, Northern Michigan University. Spring 2014
8 years of tutoring experience
4 years of in-class teaching experience as a graduate teaching assistant at Western Michigan University
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.

What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with many different types of students. I have experience teaching developmental mathematics at the college level as well as more advanced courses such as discrete mathematics and Calculus. Most students have been at the undergraduate college level, but I have also tutored students in high school.
